Necessary to have a registry?

Original post by july2011bride

I am a little unsure as to whether I want to do a registry or not. I do not want my guests to go out and buy me expensive gifts and I can only use so many sets of towels, sheets, blenders, and coffee makers. I have come across registries where brides ask for $500 espresso machines and $200 kitchen knives. I do not want to ask guests for things like that. I am also afraid if I do register there will only be 5 or 6 items on the registry.

I think you should def register. Even if you plan on returnging most of it. Just make sure to register at a place that takes returns.

Guests will get very annoyed if there's no registry. They then usually assume you want cash. I didn't register in time for my E party and Boy did i hear about it!!!

Also if you don't register you will just receive gifts that you DEF don't want and most times won't even know where to go to return it!!!!

I HIGHLY recommend registering.

And if you don't want to register for the super expensive stuff then don't ... just register for the less expensive things. No one says you have to register for a $500 coffee machine.

Also... I too was like you... lived already on my own and I thought I wouldn't find ANYTHING to register for. Boy was I wrong!! When we went I kept finding things. Also you might have old stuff that needs to be replaced. Just somethign to think about.

I would register but when selecting items I would keep things in both the low-mid-high- price points. You want to have items that are in everyone''s budget.

I loved traveler's joy, it does charge a 7% fee, but since we were not hoping for much more than 2000 to us it was worth it. It was fun, people really enjoyed using it, their thank you note list was the best.

Do you have out of towners? If so for sure you want a registry. They can have gifts shipped. Also in other parts of the US cash gifts are kind of uncommon. When I first heard about people on LIW not wanting boxed gifts, I was totally confused.

That being said, if you have mostly NY people, and your family does cash gifts, you could skip the registry.

If you already have everything you need that would be on a registry....can you put your honeymoon expenses on a registry?

I think I remember someone, somewhere saying that they had done that. I don't know what everyones feelings are on that, though.

If my fiance and I already lived together with everything we needed, I think I might consider dingo that.
