Neck Pain--what kind of doc to see?

Neck Pain--what kind of doc to see?

My neck has been bothering me for almost a year. The general doctor at NYU said it's probably muscle spasms. I tried acupuncture, which helped for a little bit, and physical therapy, which didn't help at all. I want to see a real doctor, but I'm not sure what kind. Can you see a chiropracter if it's a muscular issue rather than bone? Thanks!!

I went to see an orthopedic and a neurologist when I had neck problems.

JMO and no offense to anyone here.

I'd NEVER see a chiropractor for anything! Unless I just wanted someone to pop my back and give me a massage and I could right it off as an insurance claim. Some aren't even really doctors.

See an orthopedic doctor.

A good friend of mine when for 'adjustments' all the time with her Chiro. She got massages and such and thought it was cool cause insurance pays for it. Well ended up she had a serious neck issue and that chiro just made it worse, but she swore he was a 'good doctor'. Im sure he meant well but she ended up needing neck surgery to fuse supports on her vertebrea. Frankly.. NOTHING's worth that.

See a real doctor.

I would defintely go to a chiropractor.

I love my chiropractor. I go to one who does activator method, which is a completely different more precise thing. I feel like a new woman afterward and my general health has improved, as far as allergies, colds, headaches, etc, not only my muscle pain. I also think acupunture has worked wonders for me, but I can't afford it.

Also, about your friend, I really don't think a good chiropractor would/could cause all that damage. Just because she ahd a bad experience that may/may not have been due to a chiropractor doesn't mean that everyone will have that experience...

I have very bad neck problems. My doctor told me under NO circumstances should I go to a chiropractor. She sent me to an Orthopedic doctor. They will check you out and refer you to a neurologist and physical therapist if needed. Good luck, I know how it feels!

True. To each their own and their own choices. It’s not just her case, which has me rejecting Chiropractors. I did auto claims for nearly 3 years. I find their methods to be questionable as well as their ethics.

As is with every thing.. each case is different. But I’ve seen enough to know that I’m never going to a chiropractor.

To put it simply:
A Chiropractor has no legal obligation to be an actual medical doctor. Anyone can be a Chiropractor.
A Orthopedic doctor must a true medical doctor.

For me, personally, between choosing someone who is a doctor and one who just acts like one, I’ll stick with the MD.

Not all chiropractor’s are bad. I know a lot of great ones which I did business with back when I was in the Claims world. But even they know I won’t recommend them first. You can see an orthopedic doctor and they are known to recommend you back to a chiropractor if the situation isn’t that bad. Why not see a real doctor first just to make sure all is ok.

Yeah, I agree with going to the MD. I ahve a lot of problems, and I go to an orthopedist, a neurologist AND a chiropractor. I don't think you should rule out that chiropractors can really hep you out. but yeah if there is a real problem, you defintiely want to have all of the testing done and make sure all of your bases are covered, I definitely agree with that!
