Need Advice!

Hi Ladies,
I need your advice fast and desparateley! I got my wedding dress at David's Bridal in Astoria, Queens and they have called me and told me that my dress is in and my wedding is in July of 2003. I wont be going in for my first fitting until feb/mar. I am worried that my dress will change color after being in my closet for 6/7 months. they told me to keep it wrapped with a white 100% cotton sheet and then put it inside their garment bag that they give you? do you guys think the dress will change color? what about if the sheet changes color?

Another one of my worries is that i have heard that david's bridal messes up alterations! has anyone purchased their gown at the david's bridal shop in astoria? and has anyone had their alterations done there? I have been worried sick about this! can anyone out there calm my fears please...Help!

Re: Need Advice!

If you wrap it like they tell you, it should not change color. Wrapping it in cotton is best.

As for alterations, I wouldn't know, but see if anyone else has had bad experiences with that store.

Re: Need Advice!

As long as you keep it out of the sun and humid conditions, your dress should be fine for 6 months.

Re: Need Advice!

I did not buy my dress a David's but I bought my dress at a sample sale in April 2002 and I'm not getting married until September 2003. I was told the same thing to put a sheet over it but not to put it in the bag. I actually ordered a cloth garment bag online b/c I could not find one in the stores for a wedding dress. I put my dress in the cloth garment bag and it is in my old room at my parents house. Try to keep your dress in a place where people don't usually use to minimize the chances of anything happening to your dress. I'm sure your dress will be fine. Also there was a post about David's bridal alterations about a week ago, maybe a search on David bridal might be helpful.

Re: Need Advice!

Why not call a professional dry cleaning service and ask them their opinion? I think a gown preservationist would be your best source of info though. I don't know if i like the thought of it being hung for so long on a hanger... how heavy is the bottom? will it pull out the shape?

Re: Need Advice!

I doubt it will turn if properly stored. Bridal Salons store dresses in 'closets' when you think about it so I am sure it will be fine.

Re: Need Advice!

Please relax! :) Wedding planning is going to be very stressful, you are going to give yourself an ulcer! I feel like I started all of this, I'm sorry. I have heard multiple times (like 30) that the David's in Carle Place messes up alterations. I have heard NOTHING bad about the one is Astoria. Someone had told you maybe just to be safe, you should bring it to someone else. I would probably do that, it's not a big deal to do. David's just sells and alters so many dresses (that s why they want yours out of there the minute it comes in) - that I would be concerned they would rush on my dress. If you are worried that the price will be much more, or it is just to much of a hassle to get it done somewhere else, I am sure you will be fine having the altering done there.! It will be okay!

Re: Need Advice!

You should not store this dress (or any other dress you intend to preserve) in plastic.

I worked in a costume shop for a while in college. Plastic doesn't breathe, so keep in in cloth. For after the wedding, if you dryclean your dress, make sure it's not in plastic, and that you re-fold it every six months so the creases don't become permanent.

Re: Need Advice!

well i have been told to wrap it in 100% cotton sheet and then inside the garment bag that they provide, and said to leave the side zipper open a little like about three inches and it wont turn color.
