Okay, so this is a bit awkward and a sad story... my thank-you cards have been in for about 2 weeks now, so I have been writing a few a day. I don't plan to mail them until they are all done.
My mom called me the other day to tell me that the husband of my dad's 1st cousin died very suddenly on Thursday. He was only 53! He was playing basketball and just collapsed Here is the weird question though... I had already written out their thank-you card... I guess at this point I need to throw it out and write a whole new one, just addressed to the wife? How do I word this? Should I say something like, 'Dear _____, I want to thank both you and _______ for the very generous gift. I am so incredibly sorry for your loss.' ...
I am SO bad with this stuff!!! Help!

Re: Need advice about writing a thank-you card
I personally would skip the thank you card and send a sympathy card instead. Inside the sympathy card, you could thank her for coming and the gift in addition to your condolences.
Or another idea is to send two separate cards, one thank you and one sympathy.

I would send just a sympathy card (now) and write out a new thank you to just her - to be mailed out when you send out the rest.

Yeah but what am I writing in the thank-you card since the gift was from both of them... do I even say that, or just say 'thank you for the generous gift, I hope you had a good time,' etc.???

I think you skip the thank you. thank the wife in the sympathy card as an aside. the sympathy is so much more important at this time.

I think re-writing the thank you is a good idea. I would hold on to that thank you for a while and send a sympathy card first.

Ok, IMHO...I don't think I would say 'thank you both' I would just say thank you...for.. If you say thank you; it still implies everyone who sent the gift- adding both to a wedding thank you may just upset her.
I hope it all works out.

I agree.. i would write out a thank you just for her.. but hold off on it and send a sympathy card. I'm sure that will mean more to her right now.. and you can always send the thank you separately or make a note inside the sympathy card.

Re: Need advice about writing a thank-you card
Thanks, girls!
I know I am WAY ahead of the game on the thank yous, anyway! They won't be getting mailed for another month, at least!!!
I will go out and mail a sympathy card ASAP. Thanks, again!
