* NEED ADVICE BAD* I'm confused, and I don't know what to do

Original post by Danielle&Scott

I'm debating the whole postal job now...I don't know what to do. I dont know about taking the postal job. It has its benefits but it has it negatives too.

I have to work all weekends, saturday and sunday, all holidays, including christmas and new years, and on my days off they call you and ask you to work...If you say no that is looked at as bad.

The benefits are good dont get me wrong...but I keep asking myself do I really want to work all those hours, outdoors in the extreme cold and the extreme heat.
What do you think I should do? I am still thinking about going back to school for computers, fixing and maintaining them. I like working on computers, and Danielle thinks that would probably be a good thing for me. I agree with her. I don't know about the whole postal job. I am really confused. I don't think it is a good sign that I am so confused. If it was something I wanted to do I wouldnt be weighing the pro's and con's all the time.
Forget about going on vacation for the next two years....Danielle and I are planning a 1 year anniversary trip. We wont be able to do it. You have to be accessible for the first year of employment...In case they need you to work if someone is out sick.....
I don't know what to do. I just printed out the Farmingdale University brochure and I see they have a computer BA Degree program tat looks interesting.
What do you think I should do? Do you think I should skip it this time, and if I want, I can always take the test again....If I decide I want to do it.
Please help me...I am so confused.
Thanks,
Scott

sorry, but I don't agree with Michi....When you are in a relationship it's selfish to not consider how they feel. Both need to be happy. You can't make life changing decisions with out her full support, especially when it will directly effect her and the relationship.
Loved ones will support you no matter what,,,,sure soem may voice oppionions more than others, and you do need to be happy too....but definetely discuss with danielle and understand her thoughts too

i agree, but at the same time, i think you should at least try it and then find out after experiencing it that you hate it

Not trying it because of what someone told you about it or because DW won't like it, isn't fair to you either.

Like I said, the last thing you want if the computer thing doesn't pan out is to say 'what if'

Hi Scott,

Don't take it, Why?

Because you are complaining about the cold and extreme heat. That job, does cause to work in extreme weather conditions.

Are you currently employed OR in need of a job, desperately?

They called me to work for them 2 years ago, I did not take it. I was employed, already. I knew for a fact I did not want to work outdoors. So, sorry you are confused.

Scott - I have to agree with everyone else, but I think you've pretty much answered your own question. This job is not for you - if you are having any doubts, than don't do it.
Working weekends and holidays is okay if you are single and have no onel else to think about. I did it, for years, let me say that, that in it self is very hard. Now that I have a family I want to be with them when they are home.
I wish you much luck in the decision.

Scott, don't get me wrong, I'm not disagreeing that there is hyeg sacrifice involved here and if you guys aren't willing to make them then don't.

But, like I said, city jobs offer alot of perks, once you pay your dues. Steady advancement and job security.

Sounds like you'd only have to bust hump for a few years. It's not indefinite.

Like I said, I'd at least try it. Doubts are normal, but if you don't try something because of doubts, you may be missing out

Hi Scott,

It sounds to me like you are having a tough time dealing with making a change (I am also the same way)

If you decide to keep your position at your current job, here's what you can say to HR:

I really enjoy working here, but because of my finances, I need to pursue other opportunities. (edited to add: try to open the door by throwing out a reason why you need to leave, but that you really do want to stay)

Best wishes!!!

i'm not sure you should just take the job to try it scott..then you're losing your job security and school opportunity and you might be out of a job completely if you hate the po..i would definitely think long and hard about changing before i would quit your steady job.

i disagree -- computers are a skill, all companies need experienced people

if he doesn't like the PO, he could easily get back in to a company -- with five years experience, it won't be hard

then you can go to school and get the degree while working -- most companies will pay for it

Re: * NEED ADVICE BAD* I'm confused, and I don't know what to do

Scott,

Is it definite you have to work ALL holidays? My father never did. In fact his day off was a Monday and any holiday that fell on a Monday, he was given Saturday as his day off so he'd have a 3 day weekend. He never worked Christmas and New Year's, as far as I know. Why would a mail carrier work holidays? We don't get mail deliveries those days. I can understand if you were working inside but I thought you were starting out as a p/t carrier??

ETA: I didn't realize working P/t meant you had to work weekends and holidays. I guess you're pretty much starting out covering for those that are off or on vacation. So yeah that would suck. But after you are F/T you get better perks. But remember what I said the other day about the PO - are the perks worth it? Up to you.

I totally think going back to school would be great for you. I was surprised when you said you were going for a PO job because I thought you were more interested in computers. Can you do that p/t and work in the PO? And quit the PO after you get your degree?

ETA: would you stick it out at your current job to get tuition reimbursement? Maybe that's even better?

But if I try it and I dont like it then I wont have any job. I don't want that to happen...now I am comfortable at my job, and I have been here so long I have seniority. It will be easier for me to go back to school now at my company then to go to the post office and not be sure if I want to be there or not.

i agree..job security is more important if you're having doubts. being without a job is a lot worse for your ego then turning down a job you're not sure about. jmo

The HR rep here already knows that I am looking out of the company for another job. The last time I spoke with her she told me to hold on for a bit longer, because something was in the works. The thing is she wouldnt give me any information about what was in the works....I need to know. I also spoke to another hr rep and she told me about another position coming up in a few weeks that I may be interested in so I giess I will try for that....
Anything that makes my time more enjoyable....will help me out here. My problem is that I need to be challenged, and after doing the same job for 5 years, I am not challenged at all. The only challenge I find is waking up in the morning to come here.

Can you talk to HR and ask what is going on with the possible position? Tell them you're really interested, you don't feel challenged in your current position. If you're a good worker they won't want to let you go.

Yes you have to work all holidays and you dont get paid time and a half for them. I will be starting as a Part time flexible...bottom of the barrel newbie...lol

Re: * NEED ADVICE BAD* I'm confused, and I don't know what to do

There is a bachelor degree program at Farmingdale called Security Systems. It is computer-related, and everyone is getting high-paying jobs at the end (there aren't too many degrees out there like it). I think you might like it--my FH considered that program too. Many of the courses can be taken online...I would resent it if my FH was working every holiday--that might put a great deal of stress on the relationship, which is hard enough the first year being married...Good luck!

Scott- Some random dissociated things...

Have you looked in the city for PO jobs? Do you know anyone in the PO or in any public office who may be able to pull some strings for you?

How long will it tkae before you're FT? It will be a strain on you and Danielle for the first year, but then it might make it worth it. however, the first year or so of marriage is the hardest and it may be really damaging to the marriage to have to spend holdays apart, no defintie time together, no vacations, etc.

My dad's company said something was 'in the workds' for years, nothing happenned. He eventually found a better job and left.

I'd check if your job will cover your tuition. You cna't make a decision, if you don't know.

ALSO: There are other jobs besides your job and the PO!

WHat do you do in computers? What would you go for your Bachelor's for? My FH has a compscie degree from an Ivy and he didn't have the easiest time finding a job. MY FH does programming where he is now, and he makes decent money, but he works VERY long hours, he has nights when he's on call overnight, and he can't take a vacation until Feb, which ruined our plans for going to dinsey again before I go back to school and our passes run out. Other jobs he interviewd for involved netowrking and helping businesses set up their computer systems, and that's the kind of thing you can do without a degree (they train you for various certifications) but the money wasn't fabulous. Also, it's very volatile. Whether you work for a technology industry, or an FI like my FH does (and many computer jobs are in this industry) there isn't a lot of security.

I can't tell you what to do, only you and Danielle cna amke thay decision, but you have to fuly consider all of the options..

Best
