That is exactly what I was going to suggest.

I was going to suggest the wagon... but if you really don't want her in it say something to your friend like you want her and her husband to be able to enjoy theirselves at the wedding and not have to look after a baby.

just be honest about it. just say there is some concern about her being too young...

Maybe you should just play it by ear for now. Let the mother know that you don't want to force her daughter to go screaming/crying down the aisle, so if she backs out the day of the wedding that's fine. Don't even mention the wagon idea and if by some reason she brings it up, tell her honestly that your flower girl will be disappointed to have her role altered. My niece, who will be 6 by the wedding, has been going back and forth over whether she'll walk down the aisle. I'm just not going to stress it, if she doesn't do it than she doesn't do it.

If you feel you can't say know, just expalin to the & year old, that she is 'in charge ' of the little one & have her guide her down the aisle. and if she bails, she bails, just have someone ready to take her outside if she cries & the 7 year old can continue on.

aside from a wagon, theres not much else aside from a parent walking them down the isle...
my niece is now 2 years and 2 months old, and i dont think she will be walking on her own.....

i have to tell you that i completely agree with you. i think 17 months is WAAAAAAYYYY too young.

I personally am not a huge fan of the wagon - for a formal affair.

I say be honest with the mother and father - just say she is a little too young. Its YOUR day - i dont want a screaming child walking in front of me either!!

Our daughter was 3 and I too was scared of a scene.

I say let mom know how you feel.
Its not fair that its 'your wedding' and 'YOU' are the one who has to compromise.

I think I'm just going to be honest with her mother, I just hope that it doesn't cause any tension between us.

Agree that's way too young, esp if your having a trad ceramony, she should understand that you have choosen your 1st goddaughter to be the FG. It's your wedding not theirs! I have the same prob but I just said weddings are for adults and i choose not to invit any kids @ all....Good luck!

my niece who is my flower girl will be 17 months, and I am having my brother in law walk her down the aisle, since he is not a groomsmen

I was in a wedding with a flower girl who was a little over 2, and it was a disaster. She cried the whole time and didn't want to do what she was asked. I would love to have FH's niece, but she'll only be about 20 mos., and we're afraid. Is there any way you can say 'thanks, but no thanks' tactfully?

To be honest, it was a little presumptuous of your friend to offer her kid like that anyway. People envision this cute little person all dressed up but forget that toddlers can be really tempramental.

Ahh, here comes the first lesson that I've learned as a married woman:

If you know these people through your fi, let HIM talk to them! If you do it, you will catch all kinds of hell! They will listen to him, but not you. They will be hurt by you, but not him...

Best wishes! (and, I would have felt exactly the way you do about having a 17 month old in the wedding.)

A wagon?! I have heard it all, that is original and I've never seen it, particularly in a church wedding....
