need advice from NYC teachers- long

hello
Ok let me give you a quick background- I taught in district 24 for 3 years in 1998-2001. I left to get a job on LI. After being jerked around on LI I decided to brave the commute and return to the city where I feel at least I will have some sort of security. After 1 year I will be tenured, since they will count some of my time that I served before, and then I can start thinking about a family.

SO Ive been looking for a city job. Long story short, this week I was offered 2. Let me start with job A. Job A is in a good district, and I got the job basically from knowing the AP who I know will be a big help to me. (i.e. if the school has to excess she will fight for me.) I know that excessing is a huge probelm now in the city and i feel more secure here. Plus if I have to get excessed, I dont mind going to another school within this district- they are all rpetty much good and I am familiar with the neighborhoods The problem- its KINDERGARTEN. I have taught grades 3, 4 and 5. I LOVE the older kids. I dont know how to teach Kindergarten and I dont want to!!!! The AP knows this and promises me that it would be only for one year and then she would move me next year.

SO Job B is third grade. which I would LOVE! But its not in a great district- in fact if I had to go to another school in the district I wouldnt even know where it is. I am commuting from way out in Suffolk county so the possibility of having to go somewhere far and unfamiliar makes me nervous. Plus what about when I do go on maternity leave. Will I be guaranteed to come back to my SCHOOL,or to my DISTRICT? Plus if the excessing problem gets real bad, there is no one here in my 'corner' so to speak. But the grade level is so much more suited to me.

SO WHICH DO I TAKE???? PLEASE HELP- I am running out of time......

I would say take the Kindergate n positive...because it sounds like your positives far outweigh your negatives....Hey you never know you might find that you like the little guys....and if you don't its only for one year....but I know how you feel...the unknown can be scary...and no one likes change...but it sounds like you will have plenty of people to help you...and once you get through the first two weeks I think you will start to feel much more comfotable and confident in your choice and abilities....Good luck with whatever you decide!

I would also take job A. Before I got a f/t position for the BOE, I subbed for K. It's not as bad as you think, and I think from the way it sounds you have alot more security there. Lots of Luck with your decision!

You'll figure K out, don't worry. See if you can be set up with a mentor or try to establish a relationship with someone in the bld. who can help.
