Ok my FI and I have to go to our best mans wedding in the Dominican Republic in the begining of May. We would never go (5 months before our wedding) except that he is our best man. It is costing us about $2000 to go for the minimum 3 days. Besides the fact that the bride is realy tacky and has asked everyone in the invite to give cash gifts only, I am not happy about spending all this money. Ok 2 questions for you guys. #1 How much $$ do you think we need to give seeing as our wedding is so close and we are paying for it ourselves and #2 I have a simple black sleevless dress that I have worn a couple of times before. Can I wear that and try to make it more tropical with colorful beads and bag. My FI thinks I should wear something 'brighter' but I dont want to spend anymore money. Thanks in advance ladies.

I would give them what you can afford. You are already spending alot to travel. And I am sure they know you are getting married in a few months. Also I think the black dress would be fine just do what you said. Wear some brighter colored jewelry with it.

Are they coming to your wedding??? If they are I would tell them that since both weddings are so close don't do gifts - you don't give to them, they don't give to you. What ever you give you would get right back, hopefully. I'm doing this with some of my friends who are getting married 2 months before I am.
As for the black dress - I would wear it. Get some sparkly looking sandels, I like the tropical beads (jewelry) idea, you can even get a tropical looking scarf/wrap - just to add that punch of color.

Im horrible w/ determining amt for $ gift but I think don't spend more money on another dress. You can dress it up with accessories. This is why I feel really bad about all our OOT guests in Alaska, Cali, Idaho...flying, getting around here, hotel, etc. I SO don't blame any of them who can't come.

Re: need advice please
i'd let them know that the trip is costing a lot, and that you can not afford a gift at this time...and that you don't expect them to give to you at all either when your day comes.
you have up to 1 year to give a gift...later on if you want to get them something or give $$ you can. but if you can't afford it, then don't fret. just the fact that you showed up should be gift enough for them.

This IS a tough one! ................ hmmmmmm, well in regards to the dress, I think you can really brighten it up with colorful beads and a cute purse. I'm sure it will look FANTASTIC!!!!
Now for the gift......see, with us.....some of our guests are flying internationally and I KNOW it's costing them a bundle, so we told them NO GIFTS please......but as it was said above, maybe both or you can do the 'no gift' thing for each others wedding??? I'm not sure, but seems like the easiest thing to do.

hmmm this is tough, We had our wedding in FL and most of the guests were from OH. I think IF YOU CAN AFFORD $100 that would be more than enough, you are already spending $2000 to go there!

Give what you can afford. It is already costing you a lot of money to attend this wedding. As for the dress, little black dress never goes out of style. Wear tropical looking shoes with a matching back - maybe put a flower in your hair.

If you can afford $100 I say to give. Really and trully you are spending alot of money on that trip you really dont have to strees yourself on a big gift. Cut it down to $50

I def. think that the 'let's not exchange' approach is the best way to go. It makes 100% sense! How could they say no to that?

Lets See....I would give a gift of what you could afford, me personally would give them $200.00, I feel that is appropriate, since your are traveling all the way to the wedding, and your trip is really costing you so much, what a bummer, all that money uyou had to spend before your wedding, but you will have a wonderful time there Im sure... As for the dress, go for the black one, dress it up with some open toe heals and a pretty necklace and purse.......do whats in your heart......
