Need advice, sorry long

Need advice, sorry long

FH has 2 cousins (under 10 years old) that are quite unruly. The parents are not necessarily up for parents of the year. They like to think it's everyone else's job to watch their kids. Last Thanksgiving FH's aunt came up to him and said 'I don't blame you if you don't want to invite the kids to your wedding.' Just tonight, at a family gathering, she cornered me. She asked if we decided whether to allow kids at the wedding. It was never a question in my mind. We have about 10 kids under the age of 10 in our invite list. Everyone else has older kids (teens) or no kids.

I informed FH's aunt that we were intending to invite all the kids and she looked disappointed. She mentioned that at the last family wedding they decided not to bring the kids, and had a blast. I informed her that some of the parents had already decided to leave their children home, so I couldn't even tell her if any kids were actually coming. She stated that leaving them overnight for this wedding wasn't an option (as they live in NJ). There is no pleasing her.

Basically, she's looking for us to not invite her kids. This way we look like the bad guys. If we invite them, other family members will be watching over them, as always. (They are developmentally slow and have been known to injure themselves and break things) Selfishly, I see the wedding cake meeting an untimely demise. The rest of the family supports any decision we make, as they understand the prediciment we're in.

My question is... is it alright to not invite a few kids, but invite the rest? We are trying to be diplomatic. Our invitations go out in a few weeks.

totally okay to leave out some kids. you will never please everyone anyway. and, it is so not selfish to think of the possible 'demise' of your wedding cake. imagine if that is the memory people take home from your wedding!!

You know what, forget trying to be the good guy. First of all, whenever she the tale of the mean bride who wouldn't invite her darling boys, someone in the family will mention, that she hersefl said not to invite the boys. Jus ingore people like her, there is one in every family. She sounds like someone no one would take seriously.

the only 2 kids at my wedding were DH's niece (11 yrs old) and my cousin (13 yrs old). no other kids were invited.

the only BS that we got was from my MIL because we did not want to have DH's cousin's 4 month old baby at our wedding. I'm sorry, but a wedding is no place for a baby. IMO

IMO, unruly kids can ruin a wedding. You want your day to be as perfect as it can. Leave them out, everyone will get over it.

That's really shady that the parents can not just decline the invite for her kids. I don't like the fact that she is telling you not to invite them, BUT hey, it works out best for you. Unruly kids ruin weddings.

As the saying goes 'you can't please ALL of the people ALL of the time'. This is your day and it should be your way! If the kids are troublesome then leave them off. Their behavioral problems should be the least of your worries on your wedding day. I mean, lets face it, THEIR PARENTS DON'T EVEN WANT TO BE BOTHERED!
