Need Advice - Start Time of Wedding

When I originally booked my wedding I had an 8:00 start time on a friday ... which is already late but figured gave people time to get people ready after work

And my wedding goes until 1:30 late but fun ... bc i have the vienese (sp?) hour

Now we are contemplating going into a larger room to accomodate our growing guest list but we would have to have an 8:30 start time and now our wedding would end at 2

Keep in mind our church is at 3 bc of day light and being able to take pictures outside ... which already there is a big gap ... confused and don't know what to do

any advice?? 8:30 really late??

830 seems really late...But it is a good thing for your guests bc it gives them plenty of time to get home from work and get ready for your wedding. Is there anyway whatsoever you can keep it at 8 rather than 830...People wont be eating dinner really until 10:30 then, thats kinda late...

THATS REALLY LATE TO HAVE A WEDDING. ALOT OF PEOPLE ARE GOING TO BEE STRAVING BY THE TIME THEY GET OUT OF WORK AND THEY HAVE TO WAAIT TO EAT. YOU MIGHT HAVE ALOT OF ANGRY HUNGARY PEOPLE

its a little late but there is hardly a difference between 8 and 8:30. If it was between 6 and 8, thats a substantial time diff. but if you were ok with 8, 30 mins is really not a big deal at all.

I also think thats more convenient for a fri night, allows more time to get ready and get there (without rush hour) when ppl have work that day

Yeah if you were contemplating 8 and now it's 8:30 i don't think that is a huge difference. . .

Folks were already expecting a lateish (word?!) night so 1/2 hour isn't a huge difference. . .

Besides it is Friday night and folks have been known to go out on Friday nights and stay out late . . so yours will just be the party they go to instead of their usual!

On another note -- I don't know if you wanted an opinion on the idea of a late night reception on a whole so if you didn't -- disregard the following LOL:
I have to admit I do think the idea of having a whole sitdown dinner with a cocktail hour and a Viennese cocktail hour to boot is kinda different @ that time of night. As I don't know if I would wait until I left work to eat thus by that time I'd be maybe picking a bit . . .but not eating that heavily. . I'm worried you'll be paying for this huge dinner that nobody is gonna really eat b/c @ that time it'll be like 9/9:30 right??

I think 8:30 on a Friday is fine. It actually gives guests some breathing room...so they dont have to take a day off of work etc. And those that are planning to go to the church...just have more time to get ready. If they cant control their hunger...they should know better and eat something small during the gap.

It's your day! Do what is best for you...and everyone else just needs to deal

I have a similiar time schedule... but yours it a little bit of a larger time gap. I have a fri wedding.. the church starts at 3 and then the CH starts at 7:30.. only we did an hour and a half CH plus a 4 hour reception... bringing the end of our wedding to 1:30... FH family doesnt like this.. but 75% of our guests will have work and need to travel and will not be coming in their work clothes so they need to go home to change and then travel out there and traffic.. so I think it's perfect and being the thick headed scorpio I can be someitmes i won't budge.
I think 8:30 is pushing it... you can totally get away with the 8 start time but that half hour in this case might make a difference. What time of year r u getting married? Can you maybe move the church up to 3:30 instead? Then you can make up for the half hour change and you will still have plenty of day light. also, is your RH comfortable and willing to have ur BP and family arrive that early? Will they start serving you guys drinks and is there a place for you all to hang out for a lil while... because even with pics inbetween... you will still have at least some time while you are waiting to start the reception.
Personally I don't mind a late start and a late end.. I am a night person... but sometimes older people might and your BP might be dead tired by the end of that.

I also think that people forget there's food at the CH.. so from the moment they get there they will have food to eat. I wouldn't worry about guests being starved or anything of the sort... I would be more concerned with the BP and families.
I'm only mentioning this bc FH and I were going back and forth over this topic.. and his arguement (ahem.. his mother's arguement) was people will have to wait until after 9 to eat dinner and they will be starving. Uh.. nope.. there is always plenty of food at the CH to hold them off... drinks too. So they should be fine. And not only that but the families will be served whatever they want from the moment we get there.
For a Friday.. the later the better.. but too late isn't good either.
In the end ... do what's best for you and FH... it's your day and if 8:30 is the best you can do then go for it and everyone will deal with it.

thanks everyone for your advice ... still not sure what i'm going to do ... really the guest list is going to determine if i have to do it or not

For a friday it is fine and most friday weddings start at that time. A majority of your guests will be going after work and many need the time to get out of work, get home and get ready and then get to the RH, and dont forget friday's theres usually more traffic so they need time to get to it. If i have to go to a wedding after work, i prefer a later start time or else it will be a pain to get to and this way i have more time.

I think it's fine for a Friday night... a Saturday night might be hard b/c not everyone works on sat... I think it's late, but they will still come. Shouldn't be an issue.

i have been to weddings where guests leave early if they are that late- especially if they have small children at home, are older or have to travel a long distance... i would keep this in mind... also, do you have a plan for the time in between? i say this because if people have to travel a long distance to get to your wedding, it may discourage them from coming to your church... just some things to consider! your wedding will be great no matter what!

its a half hour so i really dont think its a big difference. plus it gives more time for your guests to go home and get ready after work.

You will always have a mix of people who are going to complain about eating late...some that will want to leave early because it is getting late...and then (hopefully for you) a bunch that say 'I don't give a _____! I'm going to _________'s wedding to celebrate and whether I eat dinner at 3pm or 3am, it doesnt matter.'

We have a similar dilemma...our reception won't end till 1230 am on a Sunday night. (b/c of Vienesse hour) We have a handful of OOT guests so I'm sure they will stay since they are going to take some days off. And of course our whole bridal party, close friends, and family will stay. It's just those party poopers that we are not so close with that will probably leave right after cutting the cake. I wish I knew who was going to cut out early...i'd tell them to stay home!

i think its fine. and if people are gonna be starving, they should eat a later lunch, or have a little snack before going. They are adults, and it's one night out of the year, they may not have dinner on the table at 5:30 pm. Its your day.... i like the idea of it being later!

Hello fellow Leonards bride ....I think 8:30 is fine because as everyone else said your guests were anticipating on having a late night and also with the LIE traffic probably some of your guests may have even gotten in at 8:30 even though it started at 8. It also gives your guests plenty of time to get ready for those that are not going to the ceremony.

I'm kinda in the same boat as you. my ceremony is at 5 and CH is at 8pm and the reception ends at 1:30 too. I originally wanted to have the ceremony at 4 so i could decorate the church but we felt like we needed to be fair to the guests and not have too much empty time in between with them having nothing to do.

Mr church is at 2:30 with my CH at 8, and while it is a LONG time -- I am going to go with it. I will make sure there's an 'in between' plan for those traveling a long distance or from out of town. .
