Need Advise - Family prob - LONG!

Original post by jcndd

OK - so my brother and I haven't really spoken in a few months BECAUSE..... he is 38 years old and my nephew is 12. Last year for my nephew's b-day (which is 2 wks after brothers) my nephew SO wanted a really expensive present (like 400.00) so brother said to me, I can't afford it if you want to get it you can - so I did. I love my nephew and neice like they're my own. Well, because I got nephew such expensive present, I did not get brother present. Just was with him on his b-day sang, blah blah blah. WELL a few MONTHS later he decides to tell me that this bothered him and he thinks I'm selfish, only worried about myself and my wedding... If I couldn't buy him something then I shouldn't have bought nephew that gift...and stay out of his life. OK - I tried to explain to him that he's the one being selfish - wanting to take away from his child so he could have something more. ANYWAY - he is also not talking to my mother(long story about his parenting skills) and we've all had some nasty fights over the last few months. SO - what this has to do w/ my wedding.... FI DOES NOT WANT HIM THERE! He has called me vile names and has ZERO resect for me and my mother - and neither do I But, I know because of family politics, he should be there. My neice and nephew are both in the bp. My brother and sis-in-law have been divorced and he is refusing to pay any $$ towards her dress or his tux. AND FURTHER he is refusing to p/u neice's dress from bridal salon - since April! Ex sis-in-law is being pretty good, but it burns my a$$ that he is doing this - so, invites went out 2 weeks ago and his is still sitting on my desk. I was going to wait until the very last minute to send it JUST to be spiteful, but I know that really won't matter to him. Him and his girlfriend will just show up empty handed and I really don't feel like dishing out $300 bucks for the 2 of them. BUT if I don't invite, then he will most likely cause problems w/ neice and nephew being in BP. Should I just s^ck it up and invite him and ignore it all???????
Sorry if I was all over the place with this - it's been VERY frustrating over the last few weeks and I just needed to vent

I would be the bigger person and invite him. Good luck!

Will their mother still allow them to be in the wedding and make arrangements for them? If so, I would have them there but not invite him.

Yes, it is awkward - my father is not invited to my wedding but his entire side of the family is, and my stepfather will walk me down the aisle. My sisters and brother (half-siblings) will not be in the wedding because of his behavior. Of course this will not go over well but I do not want any problems on our big day.

I'm not saying this is necesarily the right thing for you, but I think you should do what will make you and your FH the happiest, and try not to worry too much about what anyone thinks of it.

Good luck!

Just a quick thank you to each of you for your patience in reading my novel and your advise on the situation. I did send my brother the invite and he has declined through our father. The kids are still in... but he is not. I am both sad and angry... 19 more days...we'll see what happens..

Do the children know what is going on? If so, I wouldn't want them placed in the middle. I understand how you feel but, you don't ever want to have regrets about not inviting your brother. But, ultimately you know your brother best than any of us.
ETA: I am so sorry! At least you did what you felt was the right thing. Good luck!

he declined - thats too bad...its really his loss, you went above and beyond and he still rejected it. i am glad to hear your former sil has found someone else who is obviously ownderful and that your niece and nephew are in the bp still.....good for all of them. perhaps this is a blessing in disguise, no added drama on your day for you, fh, your mom, your former sil, their kids, etc.

good luck!

I'm going to have to pull a very nasty card here. My sis and cousin were killed in a car accident a few years ago. I would do anything to have her at my weddings. I'd say invite your bro and be the bigger person. Hopefully he won't start with you at the wedding. If he does, I would ask someone, prob a rather large male, to be prepared to escort him out if he causes problems! Maybe he won't even go. At least you were the bigger person and won't look back and have any regrets. JMO

I'd invite him.

It doesn't really hurt you. Good Karma and all that.

I DID invite him and he declined. I am happy for SIL and do believe that it will be much more relaxed without him there.
I am sorry for your loss, and thank you for your advice.

At least you tried and now you know you'll have no regrets. Whatever you do, don't let it get to you on your wedding day. Maybe one day he will come around and hopefully it won't be to late. Good Luck!!
