So DH and I are totally car retarded! I am not affraid to admit it...We were given a friends car this past summer because it had become too much trouble for him to move it every day. Now, it has begun to stall. Today, we were on the FDR Drive and we just stopped in the middle of traffic. I swore I was going to die. Well, we made it to a garage and they told us all the car needed was a tune up. Well, that didn't work and they are keeping the car overnight because it continued to stall. What could be the problem? My dad used to do all of this stuff before he passed away....Does anyone have any idea? TIA

Okay....I KNOW this is going to sound dumb, but did you check the oil level? My mom had the same problem and was flipping out and the mechanic didn't check one of the most OBVIOUS things. Turns out she just needed a little oil and it was fine.

My car stalled once because of sensors. Not sure what they were but they were covered under warrantee.

Re: Need car help...
My car stalled for several reasons (past cars or current cars)
- timing belt - alternator was no longer enough to power my car, drained the battery while driving - Transmission was slipping (seriously bad) - Some idiot didn't completely push in my wires to my spark plugs - Incorrectly 'spaced' spark plugs (not enough spark) - Intake was totally messed up and was basically sufficating my car
The only time the car (my old mercury) ever just quit while I was driving was the timing belt. The mustang would just turn off and coast after the alternator drained my battery but for a while there I could sit and wait a few minutes and it would normally restart, but not go far for either of these things. The Mustang had to get a refitted alternator to produce more power, the Mercury needed a new timing belt (ouch$).
The Mazda (my current baby) stalled out when the idiots didnt push in the wires. Just drifted into a busy intersection (OH SO MUCH FUN!). The other time it would stall out it was my intake. A tune up solved that pretty easily.

Re: Need car help...
Thank you all for your help. Well we found out what the pronblems was/is. The TCC Solenoid needed to be disconnected. Apparently, in older Buicks, this part isn't really needed so many people just unhook it. This piece is found in the transmission of the car. The ironic part is that I did a little bit of research on the internet and that was exactly what I found. We never wanted this car! A friend of the family gave it to my mother and so now we have become responsible for it! UGH....Oh well....Thanks again!

glad to hear that it was a relatively easy problem.
