Need Help addressing invitations

Is it necessary to write out New York in the address of the invitations or is it ok to abbriviate NY?

I think it's ok to abbreviate NY.

IMO- I would write out New York...

From whawt I was told, in anything formal like an invitation... nothing should be abbreviated.

Ah...see herein lies the problem. I believe that New York should be written out but on some of our invitations putting the whole town and writing out New York makes the bottom line very long.
eg. Port Jefferson Station, New York 11776

So mom's solution was to abbriviate new york but I thought you shouldn't abbriviate ANYTHING on the formal invite. Any more opinions ladies?
