NEED HELP - Fellow Pug Owners!

Original post by BNBride60

If there are any pug owners out there, I need your help! I need to know how to drain my pug's anal glands! LOL

I know this is DISGUSTING but it happens to pugs a lot - their butts start to smell fishy and their anal glands need to be drained. It is safe to do at home, but I just don't know how. My vet showed FH but he is not home right now and I realllllly can't stand it much longer!

OMG!!!!!!! I'm dying laughing!!!!!! I definitely could not do this!!!!!!!

I TRIED! My dog was literally like NO WAY! I even tried to distract him with sweet potato chips and he still wouldn't let me! He let his tail uncurl and act as a butthole shield!

OMG, I can't imagine anyone doing this with FH's dog. She is a lunatic if anyone goes near her rear! You would need to give something to subdue her for a few minutes!

OMG I have never had to do this. Can they burst (for lack of a better term) themselves. I know exactly what smell and leakage that you are talking about but it happens when she is scared sometimes...ok I know this sounds gross but now I really need to know.

OK so we talked to our vet about it and don't worry - it is TOTALLY normal. I am not sure if they can LEAK on their own (they wouldn't rupture as far as I know), but I would think they could. Our other pug was having this fish butt scent A LOT so FH brought him to the vet after we tried to drain ourselves and it didn't work. The vet said don't worry - it's a simple thing you should do once a year. FH held the dog and the vet did it and FH said you would NOT believe what came out of his butt. He said it was the most horrible disgusting mess of fish scented goop he'd ever seen!

Soooo true - I couldn't live without my pugs. FH wanted a boxer and then we got two pugs and he says we will never have a time without pugs from now on. They're the BEST!

OMG Definitely go to Coindre Hall around noon on a Saturday or Sunday. There are SO MANY dogs running around the park - we bring our guys there and they run free off the leash and the park is HUMONGOUS. Sometimes we even put them back on their leashes and walk them all the way down to the beach - it's beautiful there and Petunia will DEFINITELY make friends!
