DH and I spent the weekend searching for an apt in Manhattan for 7/1. We found a place in Chelsea that we loved. I just found out today that we didn't get it! We wasted a lot of time with brokers that seemed like they didn't know what they were doing. Does anyone have a trustworthy broker or a good idea on how to find a 1 bedroom apt in Chelsea, the West Village or the Upper West Side? Thanks ladies!

I second Craigslist - this is where I found a few apartments in Manhattan with no broker fee.

I live way uptown in Washington Heights. I am not sure what your budget is, but you definitely get more space for your money up here and it is a great neighborhood. I know that up here you can just walk around and call #'s on buildings to see if they have apartments to rent available. It saves thousands.

Depends on what you are looking for. There are some really nice rental buildings on the UWS managed by related rentals. Try www.relatedrentals.com and you can search for availabilities. But, they are on the higher end price wise so, it depends on what you are looking for. I live in a building like that on the east side and I really prefer these buildings with the in house leasing offices - saves you the brokers fee and you get more for your money! Just walk around the area where you want to live and try and find the rental buildings...
I find craigslist to be a waste of time and very misleading most of the time. They are all brokers on there too...

this is who we used and we really liked him (just specify you want to see his no fee apts). we live on the UES in a Glenwood bldg (but I'm pretty sure he's got bldgs on the UWS as well. Anchor Associates
also, this is my mgmt company in case you want to check out their UWS bldgs. kind of pricey but we have had nothing but a great experience there.Glenwood

My last apt in NYC we found was from RentDirect.com You pay one fee, and for 3 months you get lists of available apts sent to you. You do work with a broker, but you are not paying them a comission.
I was really happy with our place too.

Thanks for all your input!!! We're a little wary of craig's list; we tried using them and noticed that the majority of the listing eventually ended up being brokers. We're going to try again next week. Thanks!!

Re: Need help finding an apt in Manhattan
Thanks for the tips! I was toying with trying Rent-Direct. I'm glad to hear of a good experience with them. Thanks also for the broker's name. I have not found many people who liked or trusted their brokers.
