Need Help! FMIL dress issue

So I was talking to FMIL tonight and we started to speak about dresses for the wedding. I described the dress that my mom is thinking of (a long evening gown) and she seemed really shocked. She said that she was thinking of wearing a skirt and top or a pant suit. My FMIL is from California and dresses very casual. How do I tell her that she needs to get a dressy evening gown without hurting her feelings? Or, should I just suck it up and let her wear a pant suit?

Very nicely and calmly explain to her that here in New York we do things differently. Explain that the wedding is 'Black Tie' and is very formal and that she should be wearing a gown. If possible show her pictures of some weddings you may have attended so that she can see for herself that this is the way it is done in New York.

Good luck and remember be extremely nice when you are speaking with her. If after that she still wants to wear a pants suit then you may have to suck it up. She will feel uncomfortable once she sees how everyone else will be dressed.

Good luck!
