Need help with Long Island Wedding

Need help with Long Island Wedding

Hey all,

My fiancee and I have been engaged forever we never really had time to plan a wedding. I'm from Florida and my FH is originally from Long Island but my family is really small, and his is kind of big. My FH's family also gave us some money for the wedding and so we have to have our wedding in New York. We are both medical students in Florida so we don't have time to come up to plan a wedding.

My future mother-in-law has been super sweet and gone to a bunch of places and has found a few affordable places for a nice wedding for 80 people. She was down to Smithtown Landing or Harbor Club. At the Harbor Club I would be on the patio and upper level only (I would be the only wedding, but there will be another party downstairs) and at the Smithtown landing I would be in the Nissaquoge room and the other small room for my cocktail hour (the larger room will be used for another party).

Has anyone had there wedding at these places in the smaller rooms? Any thoughts on each?
Also I really can't come up to New York so this wedding sort of has to plan itself. I kind of want a place that doesn't require a lot of work and looks nice with just a few flowers.

I don't know about those two places, because I haven't been, but don't worry about planning from afar . . . . I'm doing it, and it's not that bad. In fact, I think it can be better in a way because you narrow things down faster because you simply can't go see a million vendors! This site is a godsend if you're in our position, because you get reviews of vendors, pics, etc., so you can feel comfortable booking because nothing is 'sight unseen.'

our wedding was for 80 also and we did guarantee for 60.
we looked at Harbor club upstirs wiciis an L shaped room and they told us they would do C in one leg and haveethe other leg setup for reception. when reception started they would be clearing the CH side and we were afraid of the noise they'd make.
would that b the same case for you?

we finally decided on Larkfield Manor and it was BETER THAN PERFECT.
they havea smaller room with a CH room and outdoor area and larger room with it's own outside area and CH room in another wing of the place. they stagger start times so guests don't all arrive together.

I have pics in my album and also did a slideshow of a lot of shots of Larkfield in my video album.
take a look it might help you.

people are fantastic, oodles of delicious food and pretty prices I think very reasonable for what they offer. take a peek.

Does it have to be closer to NYC? You might consider THE SOUNDVIEW. There's a restaurant and a hotel, so everyone can just stay right there on the beach. My friend got married there last Friday. They booked it on Tuesday. Four days of planning. If you want small & easy, and with very little hands-on planning, you can't get better than this. We had a small app table, then ordered off the menu. Here's how it looked:

my brother was married at the harbour club 6 years ago and it was lovely! they had the upper room and there was another wedding in the lower one and we were all FINE!!!

I was married at the Fox Hollow this past January and my minimum was 70 people if that helps you at all!

I went to a Wonderful wedding iN eisenhower park east meadow. It was Carltun on the Green but in the Palm Court section of restaurant. There was 60 people & it was Great. Really, really nice.

We actually looked at Palm Court and worked with Caryn Rude who is very nice and worked with us on pricing. We're still trying to decide on a couple other places (we didn't see all of them on our list yet) but we really liked the Palm Court.

I've been to both for multiple occasions, and I would definitely pick Harbor Club. It has gorgeous views and I think that would help you out a lot. Smithtown Landing is nice as well, its on a golf course. So they are completely two different settings, so it depends on what your looking for.

The two places are VERY different. My high school reunion was at the Harbor Club. It was nice, but I don't know that I would have looked there for my wedding. It wasn't the right feeling for us. We looked at Smithtown Landing as well and in the end went with Danfords on the Sound in Port Jefferson, which is about 20 minutes to the East of Smithtown Landing (and 50 minutes to the East of Huntington, where the Harbor Club is).

At Danfords, they only have one event at a time. The ballroom is perfect for a smaller wedding (we had 90 people total), plus, they have their hotel right on site, and when you book your wedding, you get a complimentary wedding night stay as the Bride and Groom. Their price is comparable if not better than either Harbor Club or Smithtown Landing. And to top it all off, it is on the water, and you are in the middle of a beautiful village right there with shops, restaurants and things to do for all of your guests.

Happy planning!

I'm booked at Smithtown Landing and couldn't be happier. Just so you know, I attended a wedding this weekend and Harbor Club and the cocktail hour was amazing - the food was delicious and different! The dinner... not so much. The fish was dry and overcooked, the filet mignon was burnt but the chicken was decent. I was not impressed with the food at all. If you're going to do the Harbor Club, make sure your DJ has some sort of lighting, even basic lighting - the ceiling is low and the room was very dark - the only lights on the dance floor were the overhead ones built into the ceiling. However, there is a nice view of the Huntington Harbor. IMHO, there are better places than Harbor Club at a reasonable price. FM me for more info! Good luck, HTH!

I'm planning from out of state too. I did have a chance to visit the Harbor Club, though. The BM Matt seemed very nice and extremely capable. The room is nice, as is the patio. However, the patio sort of overlooks a parking lot on one side. Might not be a big deal to you, but it sort of bothered me. However, right past the parking lot is the Harbor, and that view is absolutely amazing. And yes, the ceiling is very low.

I don't know what your taste is, but I thought the Riviera was the most beautiful place I had seen. The website DOES NOT DO IT JUSTICE. I didn't book there because I didn't like the food at our tasting, (actually, I went back for another tasting because I loved the place so much, but it still wasn't my taste). I have read many reviews and other people seem to like it, so maybe it's just me. Also, didn't really like the owner. Not a nice man. But the people you would deal with are extremely nice. I really liked Vicky.

I think their minimum may be around 110 people or so. It's best for a smaller wedding, and I think it would look great with 80 people. They say they can fit 200, but I can't imagine where.

Best of luck!!!

Re: Need help with Long Island Wedding

Hey all, thanks so much for the advise! I wound up picking Harbor Club, site unseen. Basically my FMIL renegotiated and got a super cheap price for a seated dinner, that was too good to pass up (I was able to keep way under budget, which is good because my fiance and I are way in debt from med school loans). Also I originally wanted a beach wedding in Florida, so Harbor Club's view and big windows looking outside sort of fit better with my original dream.

I was a litte wary about booking the Harbor Club knowing that my reception is going to be upstairs and possibly another party (told it would not be a wedding going on downstairs). It seemed kind of tacky to me, but I have been assured that I won't notice a party underneath me and that the upstairs is a very nice place to have a reception in.

Are there any brides out there who have had Harbor Club weddings upstairs only? What about afternoon weddings there? Also any florists that you guys reccomend?

I'm just now getting a photographer and dj and I''m overwhelmed! I have my medical school boards next month which keep my wedding planning to a minimum.
