Re: need help with numbers for a budget.....
It depends alot to on how big it is. I have the same about of bedrooms here then I did in my other house but the house is bigger and my heating is almost double! Very hard to judge but when you are looking at a house you can ask the homeowner what there electric and heating costs are. When we sold many people ased us.

Oh and alarm system we just bought one on ebay a wireless one for less then $100. Works with a remote on your keychain and calls upto 4 phone numbers if the alarm goes off. Has a lot of other features too!

Re: need help with numbers for a budget.....
As far as utilities, It balances out to about $100 a month for heating and $100 a month for electric. An alarm service is about $33 per month (pay $100 every 3 months or so). Water ends up being around $55 every 3 months (no pool).
Don't forget things like telephone, cable modem, cell phones, insurances, ezpass etc. Hope this helps.
Home owners insurance all depends on the price of the home. We pay about $750 a year.

The alarm system depends on how elaborate you go. We have contacts on every door and window as well as glass sensors in each room including the basement. The installation can be expensive but the monthly monitoring is fairly cheap. We pay $54 quarterly.
The homeowners insurance depends on whether or not the previous owners made a lot of claims (such as is the basement floods regularly, etc) and whether or not you are in a FEMA flood zone (doesn't nec. mean waterfront property only)
LIPA, KEYspan and the other utilities all have monthly budget plans and tips on saving on your bill
