For our favors, I am doing mini terra cotta pots with painted lavander roses on them, with a shiny glaze on top, filled with seeds, wrapped in a purple tulle.
I was thinking for the centerpieces to do a topiary in a terra cotta pot. Here is a pic, but minus the bird.
Now, I showed FH the pic last night and he doesn't think it is going to be elegant enough. Actually he worded it as looking like a 'white trash' wedding. He says it will look like a crafts project that my mother and I did. He also says we are spending so much money on this wedding, that he doesn't want it to look like went cheap on the flowers.
Pleas give me your honest opinions!
Should I go with a high arrangement like originally planned?
Should I dare to be different and go with the topiary idea?
Should I re-think the centerpiece idea all together?
The picture wasn't there. But it depends where and when your wedding is. If you are having an evening affair the pots will be too informal. Although maybe you can have a florist put together a topiary that looks more formal.

I just saw the picture. It is nice, but I don't think it is formal enough. Although I wouldn't say white trash!

I would say it's not formal enough for an evening affair, but if you're having an afternoon wedding I think it's ok.

I too dont think it is really formal enough. I think you should stick to the high centerpieces.

we're thinking of a topiary also! fh isn't all that jazzed about the idea either, but i think it would be cool.
Our wedding is in the afternoon, at the Vineyard, i thought it may be kinda neat.
My big con is the look of the pot, it they could use a different kind of base, i think it would be much prettier (of course am no florist, just bouncing ideas out there)? maybe that is what is turning off your FI?

I guess I will re-think my plan. I just liked the topiary idea though.

what about changing the pot to something 'fancier' or placing this pot in the middle of a flower arrangement- like a wreath-type arrangement around the pot?

I like topiaries & tried making themself but the problem I had is that they looked homemade and that's not really what you want. How about something more elegant like this:
