I am thinking of taking the train to our engagement shoot this weekend in the Bayard Arboretum (Great River Station)
So if I leave Penn Station, which train/branch do I take. How do I know if a train stops at Jamaica, where I need to transfer then to a Montauk bound train that stops at Great River...
Alina, I don't think there is an express to Montauk. You will have to change at Jamaica to get to Montauk. Bad news though, there is track work on the Montauk branch and there is bus services from Speonk out to Montauk... Just an FYI! PLUS, I'm not sure when that's happening!

You need a train to Patchogue, not Montauk. Normally you change at Babylon for these trains. You could even catch an express, or partial express, from Penn to Babylon. After Babylon I believe it's only 3 stops to Great River. Don't worry about Speonk, you won't have to go that far. Good luck.

According to the LIRR info, they say that I only have to change in Jamaica, so that is why I thought I would be taking the Montauk line. I thought Montauk and Patchogue were on the same train line, are they not?

Alina check out the link that Ron posted. There are TWO service Advisories for the Montauk line. I'm pretty sure you change at Jamaica! I will check for you. I take the BABYLON train everyday and never does it say to change at Babylon for Montauk. My train would be WAY OVER CROWDED in the summer and it's not.

Montauk Branch - Buses Replace ALL trains - April 25 to May 11
All MTA Long Island Rail Road Montauk Branch train service between Speonk and Montauk – including Peak trains – will be replaced by buses from 11:55 PM Friday, April 25 until 12:00 AM, Sunday, May 11 as the complete reconstruction of the North Sea Bridge in Southampton is performed. A total of seven eastbound trains and five westbound trains are affected. Customers should expect an increase of approximately 40 minutes in travel time.
Eastbound (daily and weekends) Train service is cancelled between Speonk and Montauk. Trains will operate as far as Speonk, where customers will board buses making all stops to Montauk. The first train affected will be the 8:30 PM train from Penn Station to Montauk on Friday evening, April 25. This train will terminate at Speonk and customers will receive bus service making all stops to Montauk.

Lauren, I read the service advisories, but they are for a section of Montauk line that is after my stop.
The LIRR site suggest to switch at Jamaica, but which trains destinations go to Jamaica.
According to LIRR, I am supposed to go from Jamaica straight on, without switching.

Most trains go to Jamaica... I wouldn't worry about what destinations...
There are Montauk trains. When are you going?
There is a 401pm, 421pm, 551pm, 830pm all trains listed on LIRR website say to change at Jamaica. So you get on one of these trains at Penn and once you get to Jamaica it will be posted there. Sorry I wish I could be of more help!

Lauren we're going to Bayard State Arboretum in Oakdale on a Sunday Morning. It 'Great River' Station.

Don't worry about the buses, you don't need one.
Sorry for any confusion, Great River is considered the Montauk branch.
Depending on what time you want to leave, you will either change at Babylon or Jamaica. Click on the link that Ron provided and then click on Montauk. You'll see that there's a T next to your stop if you have to change at Babylon, a J for Jamaica. You will most likely have to change somewhere.
If you want, let me know what time/day you have to leave and I'll make a suggestion.
PS-the announcer will say 'change at Babylon for Patchogue', not Montauk.

Speonk is way out on the island. You can do a few things...you can take the Patchogue line to Great River or Oakdale. Or, you can take the train to Ronkonkoma-they have express trains that don't require a transfer at Jamaica. Ronkonkoma is north of Oakdale so you'd need to get transportation from the LIRR station to the arboretum.

I think I'll just follow their suggested itinerary with regard to train timing... Do they leave enough time to tranfer usually? Or will I have to run?

We were considering taking either the 9:14am from Penn station or the 9:20 from Flatbush this sunday.
The train arrives at 10.49 and our appt. is at noon.
The train station is about 3/4 of a mile from the arboretum.
But it may be easier to drive...

Alina, you won't have to run... wherever you change, whether it be Jamaica or Babylon, it's usually pretty organized when changing. Like the train will come in on a certain track so you will only have to walk across or something like that. You will be fine! Have fun travelling!
