Hi guys-
My wedding is going to be at the Queens County Farm Museum and I have to piece together all the components separately-catering, table/chair rentals, etc. We booked Iavarone Bros as our caterer and they don`t use china and silverware. My FH and I are almost at our budget. How tacky would it be to serve the food on high quality plastic plates and use plastic utensils? We`re having a buffet and china/silverware rentals are about .50 cents per piece! Has anyone had this dilemma?
Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

This is a tough call. Since you are having a buffet, I would say it is okay to use the very high-end plastic plates but not plastic utensils. That is a bit too BBQ feel. Rent real glasses and silverware. That should help save some money. ALso, consider getting a few less expensive dishes so that your budget is not all with the caterers.

I'm not all about spending gobs of money on a wedding but I do think real plates/silverware are appropriate. Maybe you can contact some restaurant supply stores that sell dishes ect. and get plain white dishes -- you maybe able to get a better price and perhaps sell them back.
But if you need to get the plates I think the clear plastic plates (sometimes they have a design) are pretty nice.

Unless ....
you are having an extremely casual affair (no gowns, no formalities), I don't think its appropriate to use plastic plates and utensils.
Do you have another option for catering? Ive never heard of a caterer who wont rent plates for you.
I don't think it has to be china or silverware, just plain restaurant dinner plates and flatware will do just fine.
