Need opinions on this decision...

I am thinking of postponing my honeymoon. I think that it will take a huge weight off my shoulders. Maybe we will take a few days somewhere local, and do the big trip later. Is anyone else doing this?
I kind of feel like a loser, but every time I think of how I am going to come up with the wedding money plus honeymoon money I get ill.
What do you guys think? Good idea, or just go and worry about the money later?

Re: Need opinions on this decision...

I saw a few ladies on here do this.

Do what's best for you & your situation.

Re: Need opinions on this decision...

If you feel that going on your honeymoon will put a burdon on you finacially right now.....then I say wait but if there is any way for you to do it...you should.

My husband and I were supposed to go on a 2 week 1st class cruise on the Mediterranean. Then 9/11 happened and we did not feel comfortable leaving the country so we planned a trip to Florida and Disney with the intension of going on our cruise for our 1st anniversary. We had a wonderful time in Florida but it wasnt the cruise!!

Our 1st anniversary same and went and guess what...we used the $$$$ for part of the down payment for our house! Im sure that we will go in the cruise one day but I do regret a little not taking the honeymoon that we planned!!

My advise...if there is anyway to go on your honeymoon right after you are married...then do it!!!

Re: Need opinions on this decision...

You should do whatever you're most comfortable with. My MOH had a mini HM right after her wedding and then they went to Hawaii a month later, because that fit their schedules.

Re: Need opinions on this decision...

Sunny - obviously you have to do what's right for you and FH and your financial situation, but if there is anyway to go....you should.

Alot of times people say they will put it off and go later, and then they never do and I would hate to see that happen to you guys.....

I also think there is something more magical about going on your honeymoon right after being married.....while you are still on that 'high' from the wedding....

But again, no honeymoon is worth financial debt or a situation that would put unnecessary strain on you guys.....

Good Luck!

Re: Need opinions on this decision...

My friend did this for her wedding. She is in law school and has to wait until the summer session is over to go on her honeymoon. It will be the best thing for her b/c she won't have school on her mind. Maybe it will be this way for you too as you can go on a small trip now and then go somewhere you have always dreamed of once you have more money saved. Maybe take a nice trip up to Connecticut, I have heard that Mystic is nice, or just spend a few days on the beach somewhere near here. I am sure it will be a wonderful mini-honeymoon b/c you and your new husband will be there together!

I am now thinking Vegas for 4-5 days. What do you think of that? It is not nearly as expensive as what we had planned, but still getting away.

Re: Need opinions on this decision...

That's exactly what I'm doing. I want to plan a fantastic honeymoon with LOADS of spending money and I really can't see that happening with the wedding at the same time. FH and I are taking a mini-moon right after the wedding (IMO when you are on that high after the wedding it really doesn't matter WHERE you go) and then for our 1 year anniversary, we are going to Europe for our honeymoon to make our anniversary even more celebratory.

I would rather use the money I would spend on the honeymoon for my wedding and paying off vendors so we have no debt and then I won't feel guilty when I spend a ton on my honeymoon-I earned it! (not to mention planning for a place to live...)

Also, like what happened to the other bride with 9/11 who knows what will happen in the future, so I would rather give myself some alternatives.

Re: Need opinions on this decision...

I know what you mean. I was playing with the ideas of someplace on east coast (since the weather should be nice beginning of sept), then oct/nov go someplace warm

Re: Need opinions on this decision...

My DH and I did this and it was great! I actually made out with two trips! Since we got married 12/29 it was a very busy time with the holidays and the wedding. Plus we live out of state and there was added travel time and more days off needed from work. So there was no way we could tack on an additional week or so of time of right after the wedding. Plus DH is an accountant and Jan gets very busy for him. So the night of the wedding we went into NYC and stayed at the Drake hotel for three nights...did New Years Eve in style and had a blast. It was great for both of us since DH is from Indiana and had never really experienced the city and I was so excited to be able to stay in a nice hotel and not have to hop on the LIRR back home each night. We just got back from our official honeymoon a couple of weeks ago..a week in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. It was great and it gave us something to look forward to after the actual wedding was over!

Re: Need opinions on this decision...

Sunny,

Go for it! Take a small trip, and then a bigger trip later, but make sure you take that bigger trip and call it a HONEYMOON!

I think it gives you something to look forward to, and have considered doing that myself, but with our work schedules I don't think we'll be able to.

Definitely look at it positively!
AND, if it makes you less stressed, like you said, that's your answer!

Edit: I wouldn't do Vegas as a small HM - too hetic of a place, unless you stay at Mandalay Bay!

Re: Need opinions on this decision...

we found that after the wedding we really needed the vacation after it. Even if you take a few days and spend it at a romantic bed & breakfast...its still a honeymoon. Its your wedding and your honeymoon, do whats best for your situation.

Re: Need opinions on this decision...

I think going to Vegas is a great idea...ton of things to do and great for a short period of time.

Definately though do something right after the wedding even if its just a weekend in the Poconos. You need that time to relax and have fun just being newly married.

A trip months later or on your 1st Anniversary doesn't seem like a honeymoon to me (IMO) and like someone said something financial aways comes up and you may not get the chance to go.

Whatever you do enjoy!!!!!

Re: Need opinions on this decision...

OK.....

We are getting married in two weeks and we are not going on a honeymoon because my FH is in the FDNY Academy. All along I've been OK with this because it's been his dream and also because it relieves us of the stress of paying for it now...

HOWEVER.....What I'm about to say, you may not want to hear (I'm sorry)....

I am not an intense person. I've really enjoyed planning my wedding and have been very calm all along. It has been pretty stress free for the most part.....STILL...I NEED A VACATION SO BAD RIGHT NOW! All the prep work for this shin-dig has me needing that PINA COLADA in the worst way. ALSO, FH and I used to travel at least once a year but we haven't been able to for the past year and a half because we've been saving.

If you can make it work...try to go right after! I think you may need it!

Re: Need opinions on this decision...

Steph-

A lot of the teachers I work with do this. If it is going to make you feel better than I would absolutely say do it!!!!

My Best friend didn't get to take hers until 8 months later and they still had a 'honeymoon' and loved every minute of it!

Re: Need opinions on this decision...

We are postponing ours because FI is starting Law School one week after the wedding. we are taking a mini honeymoon for 3 days at the Mohnok Mountain House and then we are going on a 10 day cruise in December.

At first I was a little upset that we wouldn't be going on a 'real' honeymoon right after the wedding, but now I'm really happy with our decision. We'll be able to get away for a few days right away and we'll still have something to look forward to a few months later.

Re: Need opinions on this decision...

Ok- so now I am thinking 5 days in vegas and our real honeymoon later. I am estimating this will cost us about 2000 (including all). Our original hm would have been about 5000.

Going to vegas is still a trip, and someplace I have been wanting to go to anyway.

I do not think we can come up with all that money- and the stress of trying will probably kill me.

LULU- that place is beautiful! What is there to do there?
