I'm sitting here grading their quizzes & the sub didn't give me the answer sheet, not a big deal its 4th grade, but actually need help on this:
In this sentence what is the adverb?
The owl flew down toward the mouse.
I thought it was down, but then half the kids put toward and I asked a friend & she said toward.
Isn't toward a preposition???
DUH..... HELP.
Thanks...I have prego brain & I'm already in summer mode since I stopped 'teaching' last friday.

Arent they both adverb... both 'down' and 'toward' are modifying 'Flew'
for ex if you took out 'down' toward would be the adverb and vice versa... right?

In 5th grade my teacher used to make up songs to help us remember things like prepositions, and pronouns etc. From the song that I remember, down and toward are both on the prepositions one.
