Need quick help with etiquette

I got a holiday gift from the boss I used to work for up to 4 weeks ago. He gave it to me right before leaving for his Xmas vacation on the 23rd of december and I didn't get a chance to open it in front of him. It was a burberry shawl, but not a really nice, wool one, but a thin one with fringe all around. Anyway, it was still so nice of him to remeber me even though I don't work for him anymore. I want to send him an inter-office e-mail. does this sound OK?

Thank you for your thoughtful gift! I didn't get a chance to open it till after you left for the holidays, so I just wanted to let you know that it's lovely and goes with every coat I have! A prefect gift! :)

Thank you!

I would send a card before an email but the rest of it is fine. You can leave out the 'I didn't get to open it before you left' phrase if you want.

I like the way it is, but would send a card instead of an email.

Yup I would send a card also instead of an email.

A personal note of thanks should be sent. An e-mail is for a casual or business reason. It is not a replacement for a real thank you card.

Thank you, gals!

should I send it inner office or drop it into a regular mail box. Should I send it to his house or to the office?
