I live in Manhattan in a one bedroom apartment, and we already have a dog(6 yr old Lab/Boxer mix) she is a medium size dog. I really, really want a small dog...as small as they come, like a toy size.
#1 Am I crazy to even think of getting another dog, especially if we will be TTC come the new year?
#2 Are all small dogs yappy and hard to train?(I think it depends on the owner)
#3 Do small dogs have more health problems?
Some of my friends are telling me that its much more work then I think.
Please give me any advice that you can. I would be so greatful of any that you can provide.
Thank you!

Re: Need some advice on little dogs.
I have a yorkie that I purchased from a breeder when it was 7 weeks old.
The first month was hard with it crying and having a lot of mistakes around the house. But now it's gotten easier and she's learning - she likes her crate now, she knows sit, give paw and lay down, and she's 4 months old and she's been going to the back door every time she needs to go out to do her business.
She's very jumpy with visitors and loves the attn it gives her. We're slowly getting her to learn stay and down.
I wouldn't trade her for the world and she's one of the family now.
One thing I can state - if you get a toy breed - due to their size and heredity line, they tend to have more bodily issues.
This is why we didn't get a toy yorkie.

I have two Chihuahuas. Every breed can have some predisposed health problems. So just because they are small they have more health problems is a myth. Chihuahuas are known to be yappy, but my two are not at all. It really depends on how you raise them. If you have any more questions about Chihuahuas let me know.

Re: Need some advice on little dogs.
I have a 19 lb dog. I consider him small even though he is not a teacup by any means. I grew up with labrador retreivers and dachshunds (and currently have a dachshund), so I have some basis to compare those 2 sizes. I do believe that small dogs are more difficult but that is just my belief. My dog is more wilfull than ANY big dog that I have ever known or owned. He was potty trained when we got him but I think that many small dogs only get to be about 95-98% potty trained, whereas a lot of big dogs get to be 99% trained. My dog has had some stomach problems and I do count my blessings because when he throws up, it is a lot less than a big dog would have. My friend's huge dog threw up in front of me and I could not believe how much there was to clean! I know, this is not exactly where you wanted this discussion to go, but I gave some of the negatives and positives of small dogs. Oh, also, because my dog thinks he is a big dog, I always worry that he will get in trouble or get hurt by not knowing his limits.
