I just got a call from my Cantor that they will not accept my son into Hebrew School. My husband is catholic and we have a very italian last name but my son had his bris and never had a baptism. They came out when I registered over the phone and told me the Cantor will give me a call. I am so devestated right now. He even asked for the tickets back for the High Holiday.
I am so upset. Does anybody know of any reform temple that will accept us, in Queens. or Little Neck Area the farthest. I just cannt think of their names off the top of head.
I am so upset !!!!!!!!

It reminds me of last year. i took a class taught by the university jewish chaplain and the head of hillel. He mentioned in class about helping students get tickets for the high holidays at local temples. So I approachd him about it after class. I said 'i'm looking for a place to go for rosh hashanah' and he replied 'good luck with that.'
I was really angry.
I just don't understand people! When I was in college, I attended services at the Chabad house. Now, Chabad is much more religious than I or many of my fellow students were, and they were SO excepting of everyone. I actually knew quite a few non-Jews who attended Friday night services there, and they were always SO welcomed! It bothers me so much that organizations like Chabad work so hard to accept all people and get them involved in Judaism, and you have other a**holes pushing them away.

Re: Need some HELP on religion
Okay, here goes. All morning my husband and father and myself have been calling around. My father called the rabbinacl society. My husband left a message for the Cantor to call him back so he can explain it to him. I have been calling around looking for another temple who will be willing to take us in that is reasonable on the pocket. Especially since school starts this week.
The rabbinical society told me of two temples. Reform temple of Forest hills which is close to my house And a conservative I still dont know the name of it but its in Little Neck a few blocks north of the LIE. Which sounds good too. They also told me since every temple is run independantly I might not be able to file a formal complaint. that might be how they run theirs. But I feel it is strange since it is reform and they would want people to join.
Now I have to choose between the two based on the day of hebrew school AND the cost. Sundays or Tuesday. I would prefer Tuesday this way it doesnt intefer with church when we go. We dont go often if hardly ever.
SO thats where I stand now. I had a miserable nights sleep over this because this was a major issue before we got married that we discussed in full and here the temple refused us. My head hurts

Good luck...I hope everything works out and your family can find a synagogue that accepts your family and makes you feel comfortable.
I also know of Forest Hills Jewish Center, which is Conservative...it's on Queens Blvd. I have no idea what their policies are. I have a feeling it might be a bit pricey though..it's a huge synagogue.

I can't believe they wouldn't accept your son. I'm so sorry that this happened to you. I hope this helps, here's a directory of reform congregations in New York. Union for Reform Judaism
Hi this is actually groovypeg's FH... (is this the correct abbrev? future husband) I had to post and send you a hug as well as the name of a possible shul.
My father used to belong to Temple Gates of Prayer on Parson's Blvd off Northern. I'm pretty sure if I recall correctly there were children there who went to hebrew school with my sister's that had non-jewish fathers.
Rabbi Thaler is wonderful and was a very accepting man. It is a conservative shul. I am beyond surprised and to be honest offended by the actions/words of the cantor. That is Bull....!! Especially a Reform synagogue (not knocking) but shocking.
My father used to be the President of the Men's Club ( for this region) of Conservative synagogues. Some national organiaztion and maybe I can see what or who he knows.
You should call this cantor and tell him that he has an extra sin to throw away during Selichot!!
I'm sorry and get back to groovypeg if there is anything we can do!
