Ok, so I went Friday and got a puppy. He's a pure breed Shih Tzu. He's so freaking cute and we love him to death. So we take him to the Vet today to get his check up and the Vet tells us that he's had a hernia operation. The store didn't tell us this and we paid $1500 for him. I wondering if that's right. I thought if a pure breed dog isn't in perfect health that you never have to pay full price. Well the puppy store said that they had no idea and that they'd like to have him seen at their vet for a second opinion. Now if this Vet confirms this is true shouldn't I get some sort of partial refund?? I'm hoping someone can help me. TIA!!!!!

Yes, you should definately get a partial refund. Do not accept any other answer. Also, you do not have to pay for their vet to look at the puppy either. Wait and see what happens. If he did in fact have this operation, you should definately get some money back. If he did not, I wouldnt' bring the dog back to the first vet.
P.S. I also have a shih tzu and they have such great personalities! they are very stubborn, though
ETA: I was just thinking. If the vet that they are associated with says that the dog did not have the operation, who is to say that they are not lying to cover the seller of the dog? Maybe if that vet says no, then you should get a THIRD opinion.

You should get your money back. And, you should never buy a dog again...adopt adopt adopt. Because of overbreeding, puppy mills, etc. these poor little guys are often riddled with issues.

interesting..maybe it's common in shih tzu when i got my pup they told me she had a title hernia which would probably only needed to be pushed back in and they deducted the price from her. maybe the hernia problem is common in shih tzu, i know that doesn't help you any but i thought it was interesting to know.

I agree that adopting is definately a great thing to do, but I bought my baby and I didn't have any problems and I love her to death. They already bought the puppy. They can only help him now, even if they don't get their money back. They can't give him back now that they developed a relationship with him.

We were going to adopt at first however we didn't find anyone that would fit out apartment, so we went the other route.
But we already have him and there's no way I'm giving him back, he's mine and that's that. I just wasn't sure the rules/laws of buying a pure bred and I thought there might be some breeding expert out there somewhere. Thanks everyone.

Small dogs are very hard to find at adoption agencies. That is why I ended up buying Emmie. If you can't get some of your money back, then I would just leave it alone. After all, money back or not, you have your new baby and you love him and that's all that matters!!

You need to get your money back. But, you shouldn't have to give back your puppy.

I bought a pure bred from a pet store back in august.... did you get the AKC papers??? IF so you can file a complaint with them and either the store and breeder will be investgated.... you should have also had a vet check certificate as well as a letter from the store claiming that they have no knowledge of ailments. IF you do have that and you signed it then there is nothing you can do against the pet store,. However if there is a vert certificate then you can file a claim against the vet for not informing the store... Which place did you purchase it from for future knowledge?

we Bought our shitzu too from a breeder though- If I were you would take him to the vet again- then go with the info to the pet store and try to get our money back! He is your little baby and it must be so hard dealing with this and other issues when you first get a puppy- all i can wish you is luck- We can chat since I too JUST got my shitzu
