Need some NWR advice **MYSTERY SOLVED** (Sorta)

Need some NWR advice **MYSTERY SOLVED** (Sorta)

I got home from work last night around 10:30. I ran in the house to change quick and ran back out to go to FH's. At that time, I didn't see anything on the ledge between the screen door and the wooden front door.

When I got home just now, at almost 3am, there was an envelope there. It's addressed to some guy who doesn't live here, but with my address and with someone else's return address in Brooklyn on it. It's filled out as if someone was going to mail it and just didn't stamp it and delivered it by hand instead.

Since the person it's addressed to doesn't live here, and it's not technically mail and therefore not a felony, I opened it. Inside is a single sheet of looseleaf with a note, dated today. It says

'Hi Liam,
I stopped by your place today to check in with you. I hope you're doing well.
Please contact me, or Mom and Dad. They've been trying to call you for 3 weeks and haven't been able to reach you, so they're understandably worried.
If you need anything, let me know. I figured maybe you lost your phone or something, my cell # is 631XXX-XXXX

Peace,
Colin'

What would you do? Would you call the number to tell him his brother isn't here? Would you write him back? Would you ignore it?
My dilemma is that I'm nosy and I'm also concerned that if this kid is legit looking for his brother, he's barking up the wrong tree. I've lived here for 3 years and never heard of this person before and I get mail for past tenants all the time to this day. I'm going to check with the tenants upstairs to see if they know these people but they're from Rhode Island, so I doubt it.

But then, and I don't know if this is just because law school has made me ultra suspicious of people and their motives, but could it be some kind of scam? Like if I call this number, am I going to get ****** into something I don't want to be involved in, like some kind of fraud?

Both instincts kind of hit me at the same time and I'm not sure which one to listen to. Thanks if you read all of this.

UPDATE (HAHA, like Unsolved Mysteries when the creepy host used to say UPDATE)

I txtd my upstairs neighbor and he said he knew Liam, the guy who's 'missing' so I spoke with him and gave him the letter. He said he was casual friends with this guy from college and Liam crashed in his apartment for a couple of weeks in July but he hasn't heard from him in about a month. He also said he was kind of an eccentric guy so it's not totally suprising that he'd be unreachable. So I guess that's how his family got this address.

I hope the guy's okay.

Hmm that's so weird, I guess you could call them but I'm like you very suspicious..there are alot of apts there right? what if you give it to the landlord or people in the office and have them handle it?

No, it's a private house, so it's just me and the two guys upstairs, neither of whom are this guy Liam or his brother Colin.

No one who's lived here since i've been here was either of these guys either.

I would call and block my number and see who answers. If it seems its actually someones house/ cell then I'd talk to them and tell them the situation. sounds fishy though.

The landlord isn't really an option. She's not going to be interested. Plus she's very Chinese and will probably not understand what I mean, and won't do anything to follow up. So to that end, I may as well ignore it.

I didn't think of blocking my number though, that's a good point.

Also, I just google earth mapped the return address and it's legitimately a residential apartment building.

I dont know maybe these people are seriously worried about this kid. It is def a strange story considering you know for a fact that noone by that name has lived there recently but you never know maybe he lied & told them he lives there.

I'm thinking maybe if the kids upstairs don't know them, I'll write a note back. That way there's no possible way they can somehow glean any of my personal infromation from a phone call... may sound crazy but I don't know if they can tap into anything about me just from me calling them even if my number is blocked? This way if it's legit they'll know the kid doesn't live here and if it's not, they can't get my info.

call from a payphone at like seven eleven or something

Stick a stamp on it, write Return to Sender and mail it back. Put a note in it saying thIs gentleman doesn't live there. No responsibility for you and you've notified them with having to get involved.

see I'm nosy as well. This is what I would do, I'd *67 my number ( it comes up as restricted) call them to let them know he does not live there. It does not sound like it's a scam, sounds like someone has the wrong address.

Let know what happens.

That is what I would do. That way they aren't sitting around thinking Liam ignored them, and you don't have to get involved. Calling them would let them know that you read the letter, maybe mailing is a little less intrusive?

I would go to a payphone and call. This way they know nothing about you and you can pass the information on to them that they have the wrong place

OMG- Jamie as I was reading your post, I was thinking a similiar thing...what's not say that that this person has been watching you and purposely sent this letter so that you would call and potentially coerce you into something. What's not to say he knows you are a female, who lives alone and thinks you are likely to be sympathetic to the situation and therefore, do anything he says!

If I were you, definitely check w/ your neighbors or your landlord and see if such a person existed. Then if such a person existed, I still wouldn't be as trustworthy out there. I would have FH or a man call mentioning that you received a letter, etc., etc.. Don't call from a cell or home numbers...call from a private number or even pay phone. You just dont know what some people are capable of doing these days.
