need to find a training class
Hi there--I want to take my new dachshund to a training class. Please recommend one!!We need some basic skills traning for a dog that is not really a problem dog but hasn't been taught not to beg, not to grab or how not to get all twisted on his leash. I also want to learn how I can teach him a few tricks if I work with him at home.
He is fully housetrained where I live but if he goes anyplace where there are other dogs, he he goes EVERYWHERE. How does that affect his training class?
He isn't used to other dogs, so I want to start with a small class, preferably with dogs of his own size (then later I will get him used to the big guys).
He is 10-12 months old. We live in Western Suffolk.
ALSO---I am very severely allergic to cats, so I prefer a place where they do not work with cats. I will react in a place where cats have been. If I can't find such a place, I'll figure out how to tolerate it (Benadryl?).

Re: need to find a training class
I have taken Satchmo to Happy Dog in Huntington for Puppy Kindergarten and we will start with the Basic Obedience class next month. I like the classes, but they are kind of expensive ($275 for 8 weeks); www.happydogbehavior.com is her website. She limits her class size to only 6 dogs per class, so your little dog shouldn't have a problem. As far as the peeing goes, there are a couple of pups in our class who pee all the time. The trainer is used to it and the owners just clean up. It's not the big of a deal, but if you are concerned you can talk to Ellen (the trainer) before you sign up. She's really nice and helpful. She only trains dogs, so there would be not allergy problem.I also condsidered the Well Mannered Dog in E. Northpot -- www.wellmannereddog.com. Her classes were full at the time, so I didn't investigate much further.
They just opened a Petsmart in Huntington near Walt Whitman Mall and I know they offer classes there. I met the trainer and she seemed nice, but I thought since Satchmo had already been through Puppy Kindergarten that the classes might be a lot of review.

The continuing education program called SCOPE is offering dog obedience classes at Manhasset HS starting Mar 1. I have no way to know if the classes are filled up, but please feel free to FM me if you want details.Welcome New Vendors
