Need vacation ideas... (Long Island)

So yesterday I was soooooo excited about having our first wedding in vegas and after talking to fh for hours last night about it, he said the timing was terrible. I wanted the 1st of July but he is right and he was scheduled to move to nyc that weekend (we were driving up from va). So I was attempting to cram too much into one week and the rest of our summer is booked up terribly.

And we are also flying to buffalo that same week for my fam reunion. anyway, he suggested that we just get married here at the justice of the peace the first or second week of july and go away on a 'mini honeymoon.' he is being completely practical but after doing so much research on vegas, i was disappointed.

Any suggestions for romantic places we can drive to on long island or conn.? it would be just for the weekend. we both love wineries and spas, the beach and farms, etc...

Please name particular hotels, resorts or b and b's.

I always love the North Fork, It seems like a different world when you are there. There are so many bed and breakfasts out there. My friend just got married out there....I 'll ask him where he stayed the night of his wedding. I staid in the best western so I won't recommend that.

i love mystic, connecticut-its kinda quiet and romantic and its by mohegan sun if you want nightlife.

i also second mystic...but there is not much choice in terms of hotel so sometimes rates are high.

i did just come back from the spa at norwich inn in connecticut. it is totally laid back and relaxing - everyone walks around in their robes. there is hiking, spa, yoga, swimming, exercise facilities and entertainment. also owned by foxwoods so there is free shuttle bus to and from (not to mention it is also like 2 miles from mohegan sun).

if you want to drive a bit further, i also like newport RI for the wineries and also for the mansion tours. sometimes they have a chowderfest going on in june, but not sure if thats over yet.

What about going to Gurney's in Montauk? I've personally never been there but I've heard it's really nice. I know its right on the beach and they have great spa facilities.

What about wine tasting out east?

You can rent a limo for a few hours and they drive you around. It'd also be a fun thing to do with some friends!!! I've always wanted to do that.

I can't really recommend places to stay, but there are hotels in the Riverhead area. I stayed at the Best Western (i think) it was pretty nice and included breakfast.

In addition you can go to the outlets :)

Where is Marthas Vinyard?

Ive seen it on the Travel Channel and it looks like a very quiet romantic area..

Mass area, near Cape Cod, which is ALSO a really nice place to visit. We're going in a month on a family trip and I am sooooooo excited.

Or I think you can get a ferry to Block Island from out east some place. Block Island is really nice.

Newport, RI--you can tour the beautiful mansions and some wineries and it's totally relaxing.

All these places are reminding me how badly I need a vacation. I'm soooooo stressed out right now and not only from wedding plans.

gosh, i still can't get vegas out of my freaking mind. i know i am driving fh crazy- but he still remains so sweet and calm. :)

i am going to start looking into all of these options tonight. thanks girls. keep the ideas flowing.

greenporter hotel on the north shore is supposed to be nice. Its near the vineyards.

If you want casinos, there is always fox woods and mohegan sun. Maybe drive to Atlantic City? There is a resort upstate called turning stone, but I hear they dont sell alcohol- dunno if this matters.

About 2.5 hours away is a nice hotel called the emerson and emerson lodge. I stayed there and it was great! its sorta near woodstock.

RI isn't too far away either. There are lots of places to stay there. FH adn I went and stayed in town at a place called the harborside inn- it was really nice and we could walk all over the town.

i have not stayed there yet but at the end of august after a wedding i am staying at the three village inn- it is a cute area - u stay in a cottage - and stony brook village is supposed to be cute and near water, shops and boats and things.. they have a weekend/weekday getaway package too with strawberries, wine, breakfast included type of stuff...

I know exactly what you mean, I sooo wanted to do the Vegas thing instead of a wedding. More like a destination wedding.

Here's an idea for you, its what we are doing. I've never been to Vegas so we're leaving for Vegas the day after we're getting married and having a mini-moon. I keep on teasing FH that we should get remarried there. We're probably staying 4-5 nights and then having a bigger HM a few months later.

Love the north fork: we've stayed at the Greenporter, which we like a lot, especially since there's a nice continental breakfast included & it's perfect before heading out to the wineries.
Block Island is a great place too--the Victorian hotels and the beaches are very nice. Check out the Hotel Manisses and the National Hotel.
Also on the north fork, there are quite a few inns/B&Bs. We stayed at Jedediah Hawkins Inn in Jamesport and it was fantastic!!!

It's not on LI, but what about the Fingerlakes? There are tons of wineries there. I can recommend a lovely hotel and a great limo company for tours. FH and I love it there!
