Need your Business/Legal Expertise!

My mother and I are thinking of starting a small business for some extra money!

We'd like to open up a Silk Wedding Flowers Business.

Right now we are trying to come up with names etc.

I know that I probably defiantely want a website, and business cards, which I can take care of myself, because DH and I are both graphic designers.

But . . . . how do I go about doing this legally? Getting an original name. Reporting our income to the government? And being Tax Exempt for our Vendors?

I am clueless! My mother owned a florist, that she sold about 5 years ago. She said something about a DBA?

i just started a business with FH he is a chiropractor and i am a psychotherapist so we started a wholistic mind/body center.. i did all the research before we got started..i have all the info at work...when you get the name...you need to register it with the state and also get a tax id number for tax purposes i can send you the info on monday because its at work :( sorry.....but its very easy and the websites are self-explanatory....good luck! if you want plug in a search on yahoo or something with these similar words ' how to open a business new york' ' steps on opening a business in newyork' things like that and it should give you some advise...

I don't know much about the subject but I have looked into it a little bit. Instead of setting the business as an separate entity, meaning a partnership, s-corp, corporation, ect, I think it is simpler to register to 'Do Business As', the name of the business you choose. I think there is a fee of like $200 and claim the income on your personal tax return as self employment income.
