Never entered, but won prize from wedding websites/bridal expos???
Hi everyone,
Just out of curiosity, I was wondering if anyone else has ever gotten a phone call from a wedding vendor/company about a contest or prize drawing where you won, but never entered the contest in the first place.
On Sunday evening, I received a strange phone call saying that I won a prize: 3 days/2 nights at an all-inclusive resort in either the Bahamas, Dominican Republic, or one other place that's skipping my mind at the moment. All we would have to pay for is the airfare. The lady who called said she's a rep for a cookware company (can’t recall the name) and my name was pulled out of those entered into this contest from registering on LIW or any other wedding website, or attending bridal shows/expos. She gave me a prize confirmation number, and said that to redeem my prize, I’d have to go to the Crown Plaza at LaGuardia, sit through an hour-long cookware demonstration, and then I would get my prize certificate. This sounded a lot like those time-share things where you must attend their seminar to get tickets to a show or whatever. When I told her that, she said no, there’s no obligation to buy anything, that they do this as extra advertising so brides who like their stuff can put it on their registries.
Anyway, I'm registered here and on theknot.com, which I hardly go to anymore since finding you all here with such great info. How they got my cell phone number, I have no idea, considering I didn’t give it out. And I have never been to a bridal show or expo yet.
Another strange thing was that she said to redeem the prize, I’d have to attend the demo either this Monday or Tuesday night (yesterday or today), and she’s calling on Sunday night, meaning she’s giving me 1-2 days notice. I basically just listened to her talk, wrote all the info down, told her it was very short notice and I’m very busy, and then forgot about it until now. She said they have demos on other nights, and my prize will not expire, so if I attend at a later date, I can redeem the prize.
This all just sounds fishy to me!
I told FH about it and he said it sounds like the timeshare stuff too.
What do you all think? Have you ever been called out of the blue and told that you won a prize? Have you ever won a legitimate prize like this? Please post your experiences.
Thanks in advance!!
Carolyn
