I never had to in Sayville but now we rent a house in North Bellmore and we have to. Dumb question but what is considered recyclable? Cans, bottles, newspapers? What about carpet? Regular or recycle? TIA

The carpet probably needs to be tied in short bundles (4 feet long by 2 feet in diameter) but double check with your town's sanitation dept.
