never want to snowboard again!

never want to snowboard again!

FH finally convinced me to go snowboarding with him. I have never gone skiing nor snowboarding. It was slippery and hard to master, for sure...

We were out not more than 1/2 an hour and I see this out of control skiier heading toward me - screaming, clearly out of control. I haven't yet learned to move well int he snowboard, so I just turned my head, screamed and prepared for impact. SHe hits me full force - probably harder than I've ever been hit.

I look at her after she hits me and it is clear that she cracked her front tooth in half!! She was crying and I felt so badly for her. Needless to say, not a great experience. We went with her to the first aid quarters, there were TONS of injuries - - it looked like the ER!

I was shaken, so FH and I called it a day. He said he hoped it wouldn't deter me, and that this is something he would like to do with our future kids.

How do I tell him I never want to do this again, nor see any future kids doing something clearly so dangerous??

where did you go? and were u on the bunny hill? b/c thats like the most dangerous of the mtn LOL

that really shouldnt deter you b/c really, someone plowing into you doesnt happen that often.... hasnt happened to me in the 3 yrs ive been going...

i think you should keep at it... boardin is really difficult cuz we sit our assses on the snow most of the time, but it will get better - of course only if you want to succeed though

Re: never want to snowboard again!

Ok so I am a new skiier...FHs family has been skiing for YEARS...so I get dragged each year to the family ski trip. I have gone a total of 4 days. I know how terrifiying it can be. I went this weekend and ****** it up. It finally felt a little easier this time. It is a sport that takes SO much time to learn because there is a large element of fear that gets in the way.

I tried to explain to FH that even though this is a sport that he LOVES, it isnt one that i really want to participate in. I told him that I will gladly support him in his snowboarding adventures but id rather not be a part of them (other than sittin gin the lodge drinking cocoa.) Hang in there. try it one more time and then make a decision.

Thanks girls. The only thing is that FH really guilts me into it. He says things like,'if we don;t do these things together, I think you'll resent me doing them alone. Then I won't do anything but sit on my a** and I will die a little each day,'
What do you even say to something like that??

Then he'll say sweet things like 'I really want to share these things with you.'

AGH -- Like you said, I think it is the fear that I'll need to overcome, but I just wish this didn't have to happen on my first day out!

I totally agree! My FH is skiing right now without me b/c I sustained quite an injury last year on my birthday! Fell, tore my ACL in half, 9 mos physical therapy, and two months out of work! It is so dangerous, and I was a good skiier!

oh my god...FH says those things to me too...so I keep trying..but after a certain amount of time he will realize that you dont have to do it with him....I always say I will go and take the trips with him and hang out in the lodge or in the hotel. I dont want to be pressured...half the day we dont spend tim together anyway since I am such a beginner!

I told FH that i will go snow boarding with him but only if I can STAY on the bunny slope... lol.. i have sustained some major bruising... (like two huge purple kness and painful wrists) but its still fun to go with him...

I can kind of see how today would deter you.. it would have detered me if it were my first time... but there is some reward in getting better at snowboarding... for me it was finally being able to get off the lift without hitting my head or falling down.

I am an awful skier (well not bad but I am just not adventurous because I learned at a later age) and stay on the bunny slopes. Sometimes I am by myself but I dont mind.

I definitely recommend going alot so you can learn fast. I only go once or twice a season and I am always in beginner status!

Re: never want to snowboard again!

Yup...I got hurt a couple times going snowboarding...really not as easy to learn as skiing. But, I'm a half-decent skiier (meaning I go on greens, blues, but blacks are a bit too scary...I CAN make it...but I fall a lot). My hubby is a GOOD skiier...when we go: it's no fun for either of us. We will teach our kids, but in a QUIET place with a big bunny hill on weekdays (when there are fewer people there).

Places like Hunter mountain are FAR too over-crowded....and that makes it dangerous. It's similar to learning how to ice-skate in central park...it would be a miracle if you DON'T get hurt.

If you get the urge to do it again...try night skiing, or a place that's less crowded.

Happy you weren't hurt!

I think skiing is something you're better off learning when you're a kid or, at the oldest, no later than college-aged. Anytime after that, you know what can go wrong and worry too much to have fun.

At least that's how it is with me!

Would FH be at all interested in trying cross country skiing. I tried that once and it was a lot of fun and definitely something I would be comfortable doing with future little ones. It's super athletic, you do fall down, but you're not going super fast or far down hill so there's less of a chance of injury. Also, your heel isn't locked into the ski, so it's a lot easier to get up.

OMG THAT IS HORRIBLE, SORRY TO HEAR THAT YOU HAD SUCH A BAD TRIP.

FH ASKS ME ALL THE TIME TO GO SNOWBOARDING/SKI AND I AM TOO SCARED I DONT BLAME YOU FOR BEING SCARED
