New girl on the block!

Original post by Anniegrl

Hello ladies! This is my very first post here and I'm very excited.......
Firstly, let me say that I feel kind of funny doing this because I'm not even engaged yet. But, it's going to happen soon so I want to get a jump-start on things.
Here's my deal - I'm a Long Island girl but I live in Northern Virginia now. I'm just wondering how tough it'll be for me to plan everything without having to make numerous trips back and forth to NY. Has anyone else done long-distance planning?

I've been reading all your posts for a few days now and I'm so happy to see how sweet and helpful you all are to each other. I was pretty relieved when I found this site and I think that this chat area will be my godsend.....

Anyway, I'd love to hear your suggestions. I've only just begun doing research.........
Oh, and I'm from Nassau, so I'd like to have the reception there somewhere, and I'll probably be getting married in 2004.

Thanks!

Welcome! I started reading and posting before I was officially engaged too, and this site has been inspiring and the camaraderie (sp?) is wonderful. Since I'm in the very beginning I don't have much to suggest except enjoy this time as much as you can.

Thanks! I'm pretty clueless myself! Since I'm out of state, I'm going to be asking LOTS of questions so I hope no one minds! Everyone's help and advice will be invaluable to me.
I just told my b/f that I found this site and am addicted to it already. I really am! I got NOTHING done at work today because I was too busy reading all the posts and surfing the web!

So I have a question - where did you all start? Did you check out reception halls first, check to see what dates were open, then meet with photographers, limos, then the church?

Hi Welcome!!

I think Michelle put a link on there for wedding facilities....definitely check that out!! Also check out Locations Magazine... www.locationsmagazine.com . If you have any questions about the Coral House (thats where I am getting married) I would be more than happy to help you. I hope you enjoy being on here everyone is really nice!

Re: New girl on the block!

Welcome! Another out of towner! Yes, it may be trying at times, but this site has been a complete godsend. Use the search function to do research, that is what I have been doing. From that I determine what vendors I want to schedule appointments with on my next visit to Long island (to make it worthwhile). For example, this past July 4th my FH and I visited 13 reception sites in the long holiday weekend! (and booked JA's, by the way). This upcoming long Thanksgiving weekend on LI we plan on booking (hopefully!) photo and dj.
Just take your time and enjoy! Best wishes and happy planning!

Re: New girl on the block!

Ok. I'll check out Locations Magazine. Thanks! Now, I'm starting to freak out here because I'm seeing that a lot of you girls who are getting married in 2004 have already booked your halls. I want to get married in the spring of 2004, am I'm really worried that by the time my b/f pops the question, all my hall choices will be booked. Do you think I should just start calling around to see what dates are available and see if they'll let me put down a refundable or partially refundable deposit? Me and the b/f are going to look at rings next month at a jewelry expo that we're going to with my friend's mom (who's a jewelry broker), but even if we do get a ring that day, he won't give it to me right away! He of course wants to wait to surprise me, and I don't want to rush him. So I'm thinking that maybe I should just call up some halls and see if they'll hold a date for me for a couple of months. Has anybody else done this? I can always tell them that since I'm out of state, I won't be able to come up to NY for a couple of months to check places out. (I'm not gonna tell them I'm not even engaged yet!)
What do you all think?

Welcome! I am new as well, and i agree that all the ladies are so helpful and sweet! I am getting married in July of 2004 at Leonard's of Great Neck. It is absolutely stunning and the food is fabulous! Since you are Italian, like my Fiance and I (im half), you will appreciate their extensive Italian menu! Delicious!

Re: New girl on the block!

I had the similar thing happen. I found out about this site before I got engaged because I knew it was happening soon. I felt silly too at the time. I actually waited til he popped the question a month later after he met with the family jeweler. I felt that if I started booking that it would jinx it some how. That is me personally. Somewhat supertitious.

As for you planning out of state, I would definetly say you can trust the girls on this website. I have found out some valuable information about vendors on this website which I found helpful because I am not originally from LI. But, beware there are some fake brides out there!

We are getting married at Fox Hollow in February!
ETA: I am cracking up because I am just now noticing that it is from last year! LOL
