New JACK station 101.1

Original post by SweetCin704

What do you girls think of the new JACK station...101.1. It seems like its a '101.1' station for those of us in our late 20's, early 30's (a nice mix of rock, pop & disco).

We have a JACK station here in LA that just started recently. They play weird songs- you could have Led Zeppelin followed by ABBA- is it like that? Just curious.

Yeah, that's pretty much it.

OH, I am so bummed then! I will miss the CBS-FM call tag when I come to visit and all the oldies. There goes my childhood- that is just so sad.

I think the whole idea behind JACK is that it's supposed to be like listening to an Ipod- you get a weird variety of music. However, I can't help but think that this is just making radio more generic. (Hey, come listen to our rock/pop/light/classic rock/alternative rock/80's hits hybrid station!)

I HATE the announcer that does the taglines between songs ('Jack- playing what WE want'). It's painfully obvious that they're trying to be edgy, and it just comes off as obnoxious.

And why on earth did they decide to replace CBS FM?! The station was in 7th place in the ratings...not too shabby! It had history and loyal listeners!

Jack format is a stupid new trend in radio, it happened here too (Philly), except it is my understanding that it took the place of a station that no one listened to anyway.

HOWEVER, in Baltimore where my Mom lives, the same thing happened to their oldies station, which is owned by Infinity, the same company that owns CBSFM.

Incidentally, Infinity is also the company that owns WNEW. You know, that station that has had 4 formats in 2 years because they keep choosing THE WRONG FORMAT?

Then wouldn't common sense dictate that they put 'Jack' on WNEW (102.7) instead? But then, I guess that no one would have noticed the stations 5th format change in 2 years...

I do occasionally listen to 103.1 when I'm on LI, but I live in Brooklyn and the frequency doesn't make it out to me...

Well if they changed 102.7 again, it would just show they have no idea what they were doing on that station AGAIN. Plus WNEW (102.7) was been increasing their revenue #'s over the past few ratings books (although slowly) ... whereas WCBS-FM 101.1 has been steadily declining in local & national revenue. Basically it's a ploy to show investors 'look we're edgy, we're hip, we know what people want'. If they would have used 102.7, it would have said 'look, we screwed up AGAIN.'

You bring up excellent points, but I disagree with you on the numbers.

Since Spring '04, WNEW has had the following ratings numbers (oldest to newest books, NYC Market): 1.5, 1.6, 1.4, 1.6, 1.6. While this is a somewhat impressive show on their part, I'm not so convinced that they're 'Steadily increasing'. I consider this to be holding rather steady.

Speaking of holding steady, let's look at CBS Fm's ratings for the same books: 3.2, 3.6, 3.5, 3.4, 3.3. While this can be considered a steady incline (though I don't see it as such), even at it's *lowest* point, it still has *twice* the share of WNEW at its highest point. Ratings fluctuate. The station was GOOD, SOLID, and DEPENDABLE. It was Infinity's top rated music station in the NY market (only behind WINS, which doesn't really enter into this discussion, as it is a news station). The #1 station in the market, WLTW, has a 6.1 share in the most recent book. Another station had a 5 share. The rest of the top 10 were all in the 3 and 4 range. That's NY. Do they REALLY think they can beat out WLTW with a format that no one really gets? Z100?

Call me old fashioned but I am a BIG believer in listener loyalty. They just throw it out the window.

I actually liked the music I heard today - so random and songs that I liked!
I could do without the little announcements though - trying to sound oh so cool!

Re: New JACK station 101.1

I'm really upset about the change. What the f is JACK? I can hear that music on tons of other stations on the dial. My parents raised me on oldies, so I'm very sad about CBS-FM's demise!

The worst part is that JACK won't play all those great oldies Christmas songs that CBS played every year. Do I really have to resign myself to hearing Mariah Carey's 'All I Want For Christmas' all next Christmas season??? I think I'll stick a pen in my eye!!!

(No offense meant to all the Mariah lovers out there!)
