New Law Banning Overtime Pay!

New Law Banning Overtime Pay!

Hi everyone,

My DH just told me last night that the Pres. is trying to pass a new law (or bill) that would deny overtime pay to anyone in a supervisory position, and anyone who earns $65,000 and over a year.

It would include all our nurses, EMTs, fireman, policemen, you name it! Most of these professions depend on OT pay to make ends meet. Most of these workers, and most people in general, have no idea this new labor law could come into effect.

Congress has been debating it for months! Yesterday, congress voted to end the debate. The vote wasn't sucessful, and so the debate (thankfully) goes on. Unfortunately, both sides of the senate believe eventually this law will pass.

What can we do?

Write to your congressman/woman and let them know you are AGAINST this new law.

You can contact them through

US SENATE

Just look up your State and find your senators.

My husband alrighty makes less then 1/2 of that and never gets overtime thanks to being in the military! Believe us it sucks but then again he didn't sign up for the pay.

Are they out of their minds. It is hard enough to get good people to take those jobs to begin with b/c the pay sucks, forget it w/o overtime

I think it sort of sucks- but then again, for people making MORE than $65,000 in a SUPERVISORY position it's unlikely to be your regular dude that is in his second year at the force scrimping & saving to make ends meet- it's probably the guy whose been on the force for 10 + years

And what happens when there isnt someone to cover a shift and they need to have someone there on overtime to cover the shift? What if a policman of fireman is in the middle of something and their shift ends?

the same thing that happens now when someone who is salaried realizes it's 5pm but their work isn't done yet. they stay and finish and oh well. i realize the situation w/doctors, police, fire etc is a bit different, but there are already a lot of people out there that work overtime that don't get paid for it. so if we're going to complain let's complain on behalf of everyone.

This is crazy! I work in a hospital and we are constantly short staffed, requiring people to work OT to have a safe staffing level. A lot of people (me excluded ) that I work with do not need the extra $ but do the OT just to help out. (I help out but the extra $ doesn't hurt!!)

It is crazy! Some time i will work my regular 12 hour overnight shift and they stay an extra 4hours to help out. Do they mean that people are supposed to work 16+ hours running around on their feet and not get OT pay?!?!?!

only if you make over 65K or are in a supervisory position though right? do a lot of nurses make over 65K? i honestly don't know and am asking. probably the way around this too will be to change people's job titles so they are no longer termed supervisors.

Many occupations don't pay for overtime as it is. If I am not done with my work at 5pm, I get to stay and finish it, for free

Yes I know about this.

I don't get it.

For Federal agencies, OK - tax dollars to to those salaries so I can sorta get the raionale (even though I don't think it's right).

But how can the government regulate OT pay for private companies? (ie: not a government funded company or agency). I work in a law firm and I have to put in overtime on weekends and during the week. If I do, it's coming out of either the firm's pockets because they want us working weekends or it's coming out of the client's pockets depending why I'm working late. I don't see how the gov't can regulate that.

Plus no OT means less spending and less spending means less goods being bought (duh) and that means less production of goods and.....loss of jobs.

Good going, Bush.

I haven't heard this!!! My DH works for Verizon and works lots of OT. If he didn't people would have no phones:) They can't take that away!!!!

I think it's time for Bush to GO

what happens when I am working and I'm in the middle of something and it's 5.00 pm and time to go home? I finish it.

With that said Police & firefighters are in a dangerous profession, but I still think $65k is a pretty nice salary- and if those people are making an additional 30k in overtime, they can just hire another police officer/fireman to take up the slack.

sometimes I think overtime is abused- not by the dude making 35k.. but by the higher ups..and probably not so much by those in uniform, but the other companies that have OT.

Sass, I have to respectfully disagree.... For myself yes, I am a salaried employee if I am not done with something I will stay. Most times it can wait. But my husband on the other hand is an hourly employee with a Local Union. If the building manager has an emergency and asks him to stay on overtime he will do it, because he gets paid for his time. The money is good but they don't abuse it.

How can the Pres govern private companies like that? What does he stand to gain, popularity among big business? Or is this strictly applied to State, Federal or City Workers? ok now I'm confused?

Liz I couldn't have said it better myself, take away their overtime pay and I guarantee you will see a mass exodudus of retirements and the departments will be skeletal just like after 9/11

I guess the days of our boys being heroes and Bush telling them 'anything you need' is long forgotten

Re: New Law Banning Overtime Pay!

does this apply to private companies? i think that clarification would be really useful to the discussion.

as for the pay sucking for those jobs, don't some pay really well? like don't suffolk county cops start at over 50K? i'm not sayingt that's a reason for cutting their overtime, i'm just curious.
