new to this site and need some help

Hey everyone. I'm new to this wedding chat thing so bare with me. I just wanted to know if anyone has any suggestions on hair and possibly make-up. Also I wanted to know if anyone got their dress from David's Bridal, because they called me the other day and told me my dress was in but I had to pick it up in 5-10 business days. I'm not getting married until July, why would they tell me that...don't they do alterations??? Don't worry I'm going to call and see whats up with that, but I wanted to know if anyone else had that happen to them.
Thanks.

I don't know about the pick-up time but the one piece of advice I have with David's is do not get your dress altered there. I've heard some horror stories from girls who've gotten their dress altered there.
Other than that, I would definitely call about the pick-up time. That seems wierd.
Welcome and Congrats!!

ETA: I also see in your profile that you're getting married at St. Pat's in Bay Shore. That's where FH and I want to get married. Who's marrying you and did they take forever to get back to you????

Welcome aboard and happy planning!

I bought my dress at David's Bridal and they make every bride pick up their dress and take it home. They don't hold it for you!

However, I would not trust David's with alterations, IMHO! I took my to another seamstress who has done an exceptional job at a very low cost!!!

As for make-up and hair. Many girls rave about Jenn the Hair Genie. Personally, I am using Denise Lee Salon, another LIW vendor!!!!

Thank you for your advice Kim.
I believe his name is Breen, but yeah they took a while to get back to us. My fiance actually called like a week later after we called to see what was going on and they said something about us being on a list of call backs or something...I don't know. I didn't even think it was going to be has expensive as it is. My sister got married there and it was like $400 less then it is for me, and someone else that got engaged after me told me how much it was for them and it went up like $25. Its crazy!!
Hope I helped.

Hey ewickens. Thnkk you for your advice as well.

I think thats stupid that they don't hold it for you...I have no where to put that thing in my house!! haha.

But I'll definately try to look for a seamstress thats not too expensive. Do you mind if I ask where you went?

Thanks for your suggestions too, I'll definately check the two of those vendors out.

Big Help! Thanks! We are actually waiting for a call back from Father Breen as well. I have a feeling I'm about to choke on the price.. haha! Have you met with him yet? If not, when did you?
Is that your regular church? FH and I just started attending mass there in the beginning of this summer hoping that would help us out in booking our wedding there. We'll see... I'm still waiting for a call almost 6 weeks later
Sorry! Didn't mean to turn this into a St. Pat's in Bay Shore thread! hehe!

You can call me Betsy!!! I'm using Phyllis from Bridal Elegance (also referred to as gownfind.com). A thread is on page 1 somewhere with her contact information. If you want to know how much she charged me, feel free to send me an FM.

Congrats and Welcome Aboard!!!!

I heard that about David's <-- that you have to pick up the dress from them, they do not hold it for you. I would do a search on here to see if you want to get your dress altered from them. I heard some bad stories about their alteration dept., so be careful.

Welcome!!

You also have to store your dress properly at home. A few girls mentioned placing a white sheet around the dress to keep it from turning color. Also, when you pick up your gown, look it over completely!!! They are known for getting dresses in from other stores and selling them to you as a new dress.

Good luck with all of your planning!!

No problem Kim! Yeah, I almost choked when I heard the price for us and if its going up, thats just wrong!! hahaha But yeah I already met with him, I don't remember when, maybe around Feb or March. He's really nice, he joked around with us. It's also my regular church, not that I go anymore. haha I haven't gone to church in like 5 years, unless it's Christmas. I'm horrible!!!! My fiance still hasnt' seen the inside of the church, everytime we go there, it's locked. But it is a beautiful church. Good luck with getting your call!!! That's crazy 6 weeks....geez.

CONGRATS on your engagement!!! and welcome to the board!

i'm going to echo many of the posts on here. david's does not hold dresses. in a way it's good. i'll explain that in a bit. the second thing is - DON'T GET YOUR DRESS ALTERED THERE!!!! first off, it'll cost you a helluva lot less elsewhere. more importantly, they do horrible work. here's my sister's saga (which will explain why you'll want to pick your dress up asap). each of the fitting experiences detailed below were proceeded by at least an hour of waiting (even though she had an appointment)

fitting 1:
dress is pinned along sides b/c it needs to be taken in
hem is pinned
bustle is pinned
detachable straps are pinned

fitting 2:
straps are completely sewn in
dress looks big
hem is crooked

fitting 3 (2 weeks before the big day)
straps are sewn in to back of dress and detachable in front
dress looks big
top of dress is crooked
dress is dragging on the ground - seamstress argues with us for 20 minutes about how dress is correct length, completely ignoring the fact that my sister can't even take a step without stepping on dress
bustle is several inches too long/dragging on ground

fitting 4 (day after fitting 3)
forget about the straps and everything else, THE DRESS WAS CHOPPED SO IT'S NOW 2 INCHES OFF THE GROUND!!!!
it took a good hour before the alterations manager decided to come and help us (i literally got tothe point where i was calling the store to try and get her on the phone since she was avoiding the alterations area)
after we found out from alterations manager that the dress had indeed been cut, my sister and i spent FOUR HOURS talking/arguing/crying/pleading with the alterations manager, the seamstress, and the store manager to try and get a solution. oh, during which time we found out that the sides of the dress had never been taken in!!
finally another store manager came to the rescue. first she looked in their replenishment stock to see if they had my sister's dress in her size. they didn't. then she pulled out all dresses in replenishement in my sister's size AND (this is why you want to pick up your dress) any dresses that were waiting to be picked up in her size. my sister, being a bride, turned those down b/c she knew that she wouldn't have wanted anyone else trying on her dress. anyhow, through the trying on of the replenishment stock dresses it came out that THEY SOLD HER THE WRONG SIZE DRESS!!!

in the end she wound up with a dress that was gorgeous and fit her so much better than the previous dress. it was 2x more expensive than the previous dress but after EIGHT HOURS in the store and the emotional distress, the store manager gave it to her for the same price as the other dress. but let me tell you, it was more than a nightmare. oh, and she wound up finding an outside seamstress to do the hem and bustle.
