So FH and I just met with priest over the weekend for the first time. It went well except that they strongly recommended a new tradition for the ceremony. They would prefer if instead of having the bride walk down the isle with father and then be presented to husband that we instead have the bride walk with both parents to the alter and the groom walk with both parents to the alter where he and I will come together. They feel that the father/daughter thing makes it seem that the bride is just a possession which is being passed on from one person to another. I'm not too fond of this. I always dreamed of walking down the isle with my dad. Has anyone else heard this???

Yeah, I found it odd. The priest said we didn't have to do it that way, but they just strongly prefer it. I'm just gonna keep it traditional anyway.

Re: new trend in catholic church?
I've met with 2 different priests, and neither of them have mentioned this. And I go to a pretty liberal church.
Either way, it's your choice in the end. I'm sure they will still marry you if you decided to just have your dad walk you down the aisle.

Re: new trend in catholic church?
I've heard of it once. Honestly....its not a new church tradition. Its a priest thing. It could be something he views or something he would like to change. 'The church' itself does not view this nor has it been changed recently. So this priest is maybe a little more modern or he's a little over analytical. They can 'prefer' you do this all they want...but thats all they can do 'prefer'. If its your dream to go down the aisle with your daddy...you do it!!

I haven't heard of that. I am meeting with my priest next week and will mention this to him. If it's the priests preference that is just too bad. If you want to fullfill your dream of walking down the isle with your Daddy than you do it!!!

Girls I hope you don't mind me chiming in (yes this is Ant).
I think it is a nice suggestion although I would hope Nichole would not want it this way - I am traditional in this way and would like to watch Nic and her Dad walk down the isle. The church, in its own way, is trying to show a woman IS NOT a possession. I think the church is attempting to do the right thing in regards to their views on women.
Although I would not like the idea of Nichole and myself being walked down the isle with our parents, I do not totally disagree with the thought process involved.

Re: new trend in catholic church?
I have seen this done at some Catholic Masses. I think it is the Church's way of being more inclusive to everyone involved. I think it's a lovely touch if that's what you want to do. However, many, many women prefer to be escorted down the aisle with their father and you should make that preference known.
Some people are perceiving your question as the Catholic Church being 'difficult.' I do NOT think this is the case... the Church honors family and marriage as a whole and many more priests and parishes throw this option out to couples to showcase that. If this is not what you want to do, I really don't think it will be a big deal, it's a very new trend. You can have the groom's parents and your mother be involved with the lighting of the unity candle, where that coming together that your priest is envisioning can occur.
GOOD LUCK!

Re: new trend in catholic church?
I haven't heard of that, but I've seen the bride walk down with both her parents on 'A Wedding Story'. Also at my sister's wedding I am pretty sure that my BIL walked down the aisle with his mom and dad before the ceremony.

No, I highly doubt that this is mandatory. I think it is an option that they give to people.....
