So FH and I just met with priest over the weekend for the first time. It went well except that they strongly recommended a new tradition for the ceremony. They would prefer if instead of having the bride walk down the isle with father and then be presented to husband that we instead have the bride walk with both parents to the alter and the groom walk with both parents to the alter where he and I will come together. They feel that the father/daughter thing makes it seem that the bride is just a possession which is being passed on from one person to another. I'm not too fond of this. I always dreamed of walking down the isle with my dad. Has anyone else heard this???

I have never heard of this - and I have been involved with the Catholic Church for a while!
Also - he said he prefers it - but that doesn't mean you have to do it that way - its up to you!

I haven't seen it done, and I have been to quite a few catholic weddings. I say do what you want. It isn't mandatory so you walk that isle w/ your dad.

Re: new trend in catholic church?
I haven't heard about that from my church.
I do like the idea of FH being walked in with his mom. But we aren't going to do that because then he'll see me before. Forget it, I don't like that idea.

Re: new trend in catholic church?
odd!! i never thought the CATHOLIC church would be saying that!! aren't they SO against change?? lol... what's really strange is that a friend of mine who is getting married asked if BOTH parents could walk her down and her catholic priest told her they 'preferred' just the father!! weird...
and when we met with the priest i told him i wanted just my dad to walk me down and that's it... its something special that i wanted to share with my dad. the priest didn't say anything.
from what my other good friend told me once: both parents walking a bride down is traditionally a hebrew/jewish tradition... my friend is jewish obviously and told me that. so hmmmm but i think i'll stick with what i'm doing already by having my dad!!

Yeah, I think i'm just gonna keep it traditional. I guess if they really have a problem with they will let me know. I guess the change in tradition is just gonna have to start with someone else.

Re: new trend in catholic church?
I've seen this done a few times, it seems to be very popular now- but I think it's really up to you- they can't tell you that your mom has to walk down with you- I agree with others- it is a PC thing, and their opinion, not mandatory!
Now this article is addressing the bride and groom walking down together-not the parents doing it. That may just be your Priest's suggestion, but not from any type of theological or canon law rule.
