Newbie Alert

Hello LIW Ladies,

I am fairly new to this site (although I have been reading up for a few weeks)....this is my 3rd post!
Let me take the time to introduce myself, explain my situation and hopefully get some valuable feedback....

I am actually not engaged yet!! We've looked at rings and my BF about a month ago said to expect the 'question' soon!! We have been discussing marriage for awhile, and we are both ready
So....he also suggested 'lets go look at halls to see whats out there, so we know what we have to save'
Well....we've been to about 10 halls And we think we've found 'the one'!!!
BF says the proposal is a few days away (I believe my ring is being set)
We want to have our wedding May 2010...is this reasonable? We have already learned to look at Friday, Sunday and even Mondays that fall on a holiday....We are assuming most of the responsibility on our own, but I cant imagine waiting until 2011. On the other hand, I want this all done right. We have NO idea what to expect for photo/vidoe, limo and florist, but we are aware of the RH prices and pretty comfortable with our 'top choice!!!'
I am in LOVE with LIW and everyone seems very helpful so I look forward to learning and sharing with you all.....

Welcome!!! It's never too early to start planning! I wish I started planning before I was engaged- it would have reduced some stress!! Start looking at places so you can ensure a date for next year b/c you definately don't want to wait until 2011!!!

I'm getting married in May 2010 as well. Every place we visited had dates in May 2010 except for one. You have plenty of time, but I would try to book the hall and church by at least June .

Re: Newbie Alert

welcome and congrats on the upcoming engagement!!

i think you will be fine to plan for may of 2010..how many guests are you expecting? that will really help determine your budget, but figure that your rh will take up about 50% of your budget

good luck!!

Welcome and there is nothing to waiting if you feel you can not save and pay for the wedding in 2010.

Re: Newbie Alert

We are hoping for 150-175 guests...I plan on inviting 185 people knowing that some will cancel, etc?? Is this a good idea?
I plan on doing alot of DIY activities way in advance, I dont think we will do a formal engagement party (BF is against this) we will instead use the $$ for the RH. We blong to a local church and will hopefully get a discount on the church and the chaplin...So my main worries are flowers, transportation and photo/video packages.....

**Thanks for the welcomes so far**

We may just be date twins!!!
This is the date we are considering!
How is your planning going and how are your guests responding to a Monday wedding? Are you doing afternoon or the evening?

Re: Newbie Alert

Welcome!!!! Soooo exciting... I'm glad you found a hall!!!

You may want to sit down with BF and figure out how much you two can realistically set aside each month for the wedding (make sure to leave room for those very unexpected, and oh so expensive, surprise expensives that life likes to throw our way). Once you have this number, you will have your budget.

Weddings on here tend to range from $25K - $60k depending on the time of year, number of people invited, and extravagous. However, I think most weddings are in the high 20s to mid or high-30s. (Correct me if I'm wrong ladies) A lot of it depends on what you want and how many people.

If you have any questions, feel free to FM me

And CONGRATS (in advance!)

Get the big things out of the way first : Church, RH, Photo/Video Music. I'm done with everything, however I'm not doing a normal wedding. If you have a RH that's a good start. I would start looking at photo/video & music. The best book up quickly. Everyone here is very helpful 7 fun to chat with. You'll do fine.........Good Luck 7 Welcome

Hey welcome & congrats!

It sounds like you're very organized and are ready to get planning even more, so I think you'll be fine for a May 2010 date!

Re: Newbie Alert

i think the above post is pretty much the norm in terms of price--we'll be somewhere in the low 20s without our hm, but there are plenty of girls who have done it for even less than this and had beautiful weddings--its really what you're comfortable spending

Welcome and Congrats!!

You have time for May 2010, but remember, the holiday weekends book quickly so you may want to do RH and ceremony location within the next month or so...

Which RH's did you look at?

Welcome =)

May 2010 sounds fine, I completely understand you not wanting to wait until 2011. Your situation sounds similar to mine. FH and I were talking about getting married and he kept telling I would have the best Christmas ever last year and it was.

Welcome, welcome! May 2010 is plenty of time. People over stress about how much time you need. If you are organized anything can be done.

Welcome and congrats!!
As another poster said, definitely throw your budget into a spreadsheet and account for extra expenses that may rear their ugly heads (our truck LOVES to fall apart just as we have a payment to make ) One thing that I have found in my planning is that you can make anything you want happen if you want it to. Don't spend an arm & a leg on something that you might be able to get for a much lower price just because you haven't shopped around. Do lots of research and definitely always try to negotiate if possible. Good luck with your planning!!

PSST - Look into local florists...seriously like 1/3 of the price for the same job...

Welcome!!!!! It's never too early to start planning!!

There have been posts on here about the total cost of weddings...the RH is about half of the total amount...also as you would expect, the more ppl you have the more expensive things get. When you are ready to book RH, make your guest list first and then shave off about 25% to be on the safe side....RHs like to have you guarantee a high mininum bec even if you fall below your mininum, you still have to pay for those plates (most RHs will let you upgrade some parts of your CH with that extra money though!). As for the DJ and the flowers, etc don't worry...we'll be here for you!!!

Re: Newbie Alert

Welcome to the boards! I don't think you have to worry too much. There are so many way you can stay within budget. I am getting married in May 2010 and just booked our RH on Sunday. So, it is possible. Keep searching the boards for deals on DJs, RHs, Photogs etc. There is something for every budget...honestly!

Good Luck!
