Newbie here

Hi, my name is Rita and this place was recommended by JennRenee, whom I know from elsewhere on the net, and even share the same OB. I live in Eastern Queens and have been married for 5 years. We have a 2.5 yo son, Lucas, and am 24 weeks pregnant with a daughter.

I'm a very high risk pregnancy, am GD on insulin (was with my son, too), have a uterine deformity that puts me at a great risk for premature birth. I had a cerclage placed at 20 weeks and went into perterm labor, spending a week in the hospital. I'm home on modified bedrest now, and hoping to get this little one as far into the third trimester as possible. My son was a 36 weeker, and we were amazed I carried him that long.

And, if my obstetrical history is not enough, I found out I was pregnant on August 3rd!!!!! This little girlie is a PILL baby, and I continued to get periods and take the pill for about 3 months into the pregnancy. My first OB visit the u/s dated us at 18 weeks. I had my amnio the next day, and the level 2 u/s the day after that. It's been an interesting 6 weeks, huh?????

Looking forward to getting to know you all.

Rita

Welcome Rita! First of all congrats on your pregnancy, I can relate...I had an emergency cerclage put in at 19 weeks and we had a scare there for a while. I just had my baby girl Mia on July 22 ...I was on bedrest for the entire remainder of my pregnancy, it sure feels good to be up and walking again.

Just wanted to add that my wedding anniversary is also Aug 3rd so that's a great day!.

Welcome!

Edited to say I'm from Queens too!

Welcome. I am also on insilin. I give you a ton of credit for having another baby as I just will never go thru this again.
I am glad that your little one is doing so well. If you have any GD tips for me I would love them. I was only diagnosed last week so it has been a very overwhelming.

Welcome Rita. We look foward to sharing your experience.

What is cervical cerclage?
Cervical cerclage is a surgical procedure used to keep the cervix closed during pregnancy. The cervix is the lowest part of the uterus and extends into the ******. During normal pregnancy it remains closed until the third trimester.

When is it used?
Cervical cerclage is used to prevent a miscarriage or premature delivery if you have an incompetent cervix. An incompetent cervix is a cervix that opens without labor too early in a pregnancy. Stitching around the cervix helps keep it closed as the baby grows. The procedure may be used if you have a history of miscarriages during the middle third of pregnancy.

If you have a history of second-trimester miscarriages, a cerclage may be done at the beginning of your second trimester. Otherwise it may be done at the time your Dr finds that your cervix is opening too early.

An alternative treatment for an incompetent cervix is bedrest that may last for several months.

Re: Newbie here

Hi Camille,

For me, a cerclage is a must in every pregnancy I will have. This is because of the uterine deformity I have. I don't have a documented history of incompetent cervix because I have been treated so carefully in my pregnancies.

With my son, which was a planned pregnancy, my cerclage was placed preventatively at 13 weeks. I required no bedrest with him, had no cervical changes until my water broke spontaneously at 36 weeks. So, that's why I say it was a miracle.

With this little one, the doc was amazed at 18 weeks, the day we discovered we were pregnant, that my cervix was still closed tight. After all test results came back ok, baby was healthy and viable, he placed the cerclage preventatively. But, I started contracting and my cervix started to efface. Had it not been for the cerclage, I would have lost her due to preterm labor. Bedrest and meds stopped the cervical changes and actually reversed them (who knew????). But, now I must rest easy til she gets here. Had the cerclage been placed earlier, I might not have needed the bedrest, as I didn't with my son.

Congrats on the safe arrival of Mia. That's my niece's name. And, I'm in Bayside, where are you???

Thanks, Shamma. I just found out on your anniversary that I was pregnant. But, I was already 18 weeks!!!!

According to the ultrasounds, I conceived somewhere around 3/31/03.

Re: Newbie here

Michele,

Sadly I know lots about GD and diabetes in general. Type II diabetes runs in my family, I am overweight, hence I was a HIGH RISK to develop GD. If these two apply to you, it could be the reason you are GD and need insulin.

It ****s, I know, but a healthy baby is so very worth it. My first baby died due to a brain deformity at 20 weeks gestation. This was my first daughter. It had NOTHING to do with GD, although I was diagnosed early in that pregnancy due to being carefully monitored and on insulin at 9 weeks with her.

With my son, as soon as I got a positive HPT, I started testing my sugar and it was running high already, so I started insulin.

With this baby, finding out I was so far along and not taking insulin, I feared the worst. It is truly a sheer miracle she is healthy/not deformed as uncontrollable diabetes in pregnancy has a very strong risk of fetal deformities. So, I am on insulin for the rest of this pregnancy. And, I take it 4 times a day. That has always been my regimen.

Yes, the shots ****, the diet stinks, but it's all we can do. I strongly recommend you find someone that specializes in diabetes in pregnancy. I see a nurse at North Shore Manhasset whom I've seen since my first pregnancy in 2000. She is in their maternal/fetal medicine department and heads up their diabetes in pregnancy division. They actually have classes that talk about diet, nutrition, etc. You don't need to starve if you have GD. You do need to limit your carbs, and combine them with fat or protein, but the rest is gravy. Hope that makes sense. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me or FM me.
