newbie looking for help...the Bronx

I'm brand new here but am a regular on a San Diego website just like this. A friend from there told me about this one and I figured I should go ahead and get my feat wet. We currently live in San Diego but my DH is getting out of the Navy in June and will be starting a residency program at Montefiore Medical Center. We are still waiting to hear about housing and I have yet to start a job hunt. I am also an avid triathlete who will miss her perfect So Cal weather. I have lots of questions and was hoping I could get some help here.

Thanks!

Re: newbie looking for help...the Bronx

I guess I have very general questions right now. Does/did anyone live near there, does anyone work in the exercise physiology field? Does anyone do triathlons/road races? Is anyone active in the Jewish community near there? We are going into this rather blindly, unfortunately.

I am doing random searches on the internet for job listings and racing clubs but was looking for some personal experiences.

Any thoughts or help is appreciated. TIA!

My husband is a triathlete. He's a member of the USA Triathlon club and also the New York City Road Runners club, he does a few triathlons every year, and a few road races too. He also loves www.trinewbies.com, he's as addicted to that dicusssion forum as I am to this one! You should also check out metrotri.com, it's a local tri website for Long Island.

It's true NY weather doesn't hold a candle to San Diego, but there's definitely no shortage of triathlons around here (and throughout the NY Metropolitan area).

If you want some more info, or even a person to train with (maybe you could help my hubby! He's slacking this year!!) just let me know and I can send you his e-mail address.

Good luck!!

Jill

Oh Jill...thank you so much. I would love to chat with your hubbie about training. I will check out those websites too.

BMD...My DH will be at Montefiore which I believe is further North. We still don't know if we will get housing with them. What a PITA!

Re: newbie looking for help...the Bronx

Hi and welcome!

Montifiore is an excellent hospital!

I used to live near it.

The neighborhood I lived in is called Norwood and it was between Mosholu Parkway and Bedford Park Boulevard. It's close to the Bronx Zoo, closer to the Botanical Gardens and a walk to the Metro-North Train Station to the city, plus near 'express' bus to the city and subways and city buses.

Please FM me if you would like me to get my old landlord's name.

Also does Montefiore have an apartment placement thing for residents? Some places do.

I live in another section now called Woodlawn which I like better than my old area because it's more residential. It's close to Montefiore too but not as close as where I used to live.
It's also near the metro train to NYC.

If you want you can FM me (forum mail, dont' use the email feature because I never check that account!) and I can see what I can help with.

However I am busy since in 2 weeks I am getting married. I can find more information for you in mid-may.

I hope that helps in any way possible!

About triatholons - there's the NYC marathon in NOvember. There's a Van Cortlandt run (not marathon) that just took place in Van Cortlandt park in the Riverdale Section of the Bronx.

There is a large jewish community in the Bronx. I believer there's a synogogue/temple in Morris Park which is south of the hospital. There's also a few in the Riverdale Section of the Bronx.

I hope that also helps!

I was just going to recommend that you may like the Riverdale section of the Bronx. It is a really good neighborhood to raise a family. It is only a 10 minute drive to Montefiorre Hospital.
Riverdale is a 25 minute commute to Manhattan on the metro north train.
There are a lot of parks there and it is really safe.
Please fm me if you have any other specific questions.
I grew up in the Bronx and my family is still there-
I kind of miss it.
Good Luck
