nice, but inexpensive, hotels in NYC

DH and I are going to spend th weekend in the city for my b-day. When I first looked, The Ameritania had rooms available and since we've stayed there before we knew it was nice. When I went to book it, it wasn't available. Does anyone have any suggestions? We're looking to be in Times Square/Broadway area and want the room to be under $175 a night. TIA!

I stayed at the Chelsea Savoy. It's ok. I don't think it's as expensive as the place you mentioned and it's not in Time Square, but close...

What about the Milford Plaza? Not sure how nice or expensive it is though..

Check out the Millennium Broadway. Its on hotels.com for about $179. You should also think about Priceline... Check out this message board to see the great prices people have gotten:

I just get so nervous because I keep cross referencing on tripadvisor and many of the affordable hotels get REALLY bad reviews. I will check all of your suggestions, thanks!

Gorham no longer exists ... it's now called the Blakley I think.

I've always been a fan of the Crowne Plazas (I've only stayed at the UN Crowne Plaza, but there's one in Times Square too) and The Intercontinentals (Barclay on 48th is nice). Might be worth checking out their rates if you haven't found anything yet.

Check the affina.com website. They have lots of hotels in the city. You can also come across specials.

I came across this hotel while searching awhile ago - it looks so nice and modern and I am now dying to stay there. It also seems reasonable.

Roger Williams is cool--- I've been to events there, but haven't stayed. The Intercontinental seems to have better published fares than a lot of the others and it is so nice. Stay away from the New Yorker!! I stay there for trade shows at Javitts becasue it's cloe but it is NOT nice or romantic!!
