thinking of going there for a week in August as our summer vacation. We are looking to stay someplace that is not 200.00 a night but clean and nice, any recomendations? We were thinking maybe The marriott but if we can save some $$ that would be great. Thanks in advance.

How about Old Town Alexandria? There's TONS of stuff to do there - shopping, the waterfront, great restaurants.... and D.C. is only a couple of metro stops away (I live in Northern VA).
The Embassy Suites is right next to the metro station and is fairly new:
also try looking into bethesda, md. cute little town just outside dc. lots of restaurants and stuff right there, but also a metro nearby so you can get downtown easily.
crystal city also has tons of hotels b/c it's near reagan airport. there's a metro near there too, not sure if you can walk from any of the hotels though.
if you really want to stay in dc proper stick to places in nw dc. you really don't want to be in a lot of the other areas.
also i'd avoid silver spring, md if i were you.

Old town's really nice, but it may be a bit on the pricey side!
I live in Crystal city which is about a 10 minute metro to DC and there are a ton of hotels in the area, they are all within walking distance to the metro. There's two marriots, a hampton inn, hilton, sheraton, radisson and a holiday inn (though the holiday inn is a little bit farther from the metro then the rest of them!).

I lived in DuPont Circle--there are a few hotels around there that were really nice, and it is very centrally located!
