NICU

NICU

I know 1st hand how scary it is to have a baby that goes to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. I also know that no one else no matter how close they are to you and your husband are no one can truely understand what you are going through....unless they themselves went through it. ( I was lucky in way because my sister and her husband also had a baby in the NICU also...and they help us through some tough days) All these scary medical terms are being thrown out at you...and you don't get to bond with your baby the way you had imagined. so if anyone finds them selves in this situation and you need to talk to someone who will understand please feel free to contact me....ill be happy to listen or often advise in any way i can.

That's very sweet of you - thank you!

At which hospital did you deliver and were you happy with their NICU?

With all you went through with your son, I give you mad props. You stayed the rock that you always are and stepped up on so many levels. I'm so proud of you and I envy your strength and courage.

P.S. Your son is adorable!!!

Re: NICU

I delivered at StonyBrook...and after my family history I wouldn't go anywhere else.
The NICU was great....not only did my son get the best possible case....but the nurse and docs were warm and would sit with me at 3 in the morning...(while my FH was at work)...just to keep me company so I wouldn't have to go through it alone.

Re: NICU

Our Story.....sorry so long
My Son was born 15 weeks premature.
My water broke early...my FH rushed me to Stony Brook....we lived in Melville at the time...but instisted we go to Stony Brook, because I knew if I had to deliver they would take the baby via helecopter to Stony Brook, if I was at any other hospital.
They tried to stop my labor by giving me Magnesium...and they also gave me steriods for the baby's lungs. But since my water broke....and I didn't deliver yet I develped a serious infection....after 72 hours the magnesium was no longer working my contractions were only 8 min apart...and I was in agnony because of the infection...(the contractions were a piece of cake because the infection was un bearbale constant pain.)
As my doc was discussing option with us, I had a contraction and the baby's heart rate dropped...so I was quickly rushed in to the deivery room where an emergancy section was performed...the room was filled with people for me and my baby....they told me that I wouldn't hear him cry he was too immature...but at 8:56 am on 8/19/04 I heard James cry...the NICU team worked on him and got him tube rather quickly so that he could be put on a vent....A Nicu Nurse...who later became my hero brought my baby over to me so that I could look at him before they rushed him off to the NICU Unit. After they took the baby out of the room I heard my doc yelling because I was much worse than anyone thought...see I dont run feavers...so no one realized how bad the infection was. The doc later told my mom and FH that I would have died within a few hours if he didn't perform the section. We the drugs wore off a little and I was able to lift up my butt they wheeled me into the NICU unit to see my baby.
He wighed 1lb 14 oz and was 13 inches long
Because he was hooked up to so many machines I wasn't able to hold him until he was 3 weeks old....and he was about 6 weeks old before we really knew if he was going to make it.

My son is a fighter...he has gone through so much already...and I admire his will power...evertime a doc or nurse told us not to expect him to continue on a foward path he proved them wrong and went one step further.

He was in the Hospital a total of 72 days...and when he came home was still on Oxygen for an addtional 41 days.

I still cry every night when I put him to bed....I know that we are very lucky...that God kept our baby boy safe.

If you click on my screen name you will see a picture of James....Ill try to post some newer ones soon.

What a wonderful story you posted. Although my baby was only in NICU for 5 days - I can kind of understand what you are saying in this post. Leaving the hospital without my baby after birth was probably the saddest thing I have done in my life. I was grateful he was going to be fine - it just needed time but I cried on andon for those few days he was there without me. And being in a hospital room with a girl who had her baby in the room - I was happy for her but so sad my baby couldn't be with me. Having someone who went thru it call you and talk toyou does help.

Wow, your story is very touching and your son is adorable. I'm a NICU nurse and see what the parents go through everyday. It's a major rollcoaster ride up and down. Everyday is challenge and no one knows what the parents are going through unless you been there yourself. As a new mom I can't imagine how hard it is to see your baby in such a state. My heart goes out to the all the parents it truely does break my heart to see them suffering. But, most of our patients eventually go home and we're all very happy and sad at the same time because, we also grow quite attached to our patients. They are truely god's little miracles! Thanks for sharing your story.

Thank you to everyone for all your kind words and thoughts. I know how blessed my little family is....and I also know to never ever take it for granted. As crazy as it sounds the whole experience has been very humbling for me....and I think a better person...My son has given me the world and I plan to give him the world and much much more in return.
