My neighbors just came and gave me a turtle that our other neighbor found...
I dont know what kind of turtle it is, I dont know if he is water or land, though i suspect land.. i dont know what to feed him
I have a water turtle already, a slider, but this guy is MUCH bigger..
Please give me some info if you can
ALso.. i refuse to give it back to who ever owned it before me.. THEY PAINTED HIS SHELL!!!! WHO DOES THAT???
UPDATE
thank you girls so much .. thanks to nifheim and a pet store we found out its a Russian Tortoise. I think it might be too much work to take care of (FH and my family might kill me if i do considering i have 2 dogs a water turtle and a rabbit )
so tomorrow we are going to try and decide what we want to do with it. Right now hes just chilling in my room in a long bin and Casper my dog is 'babysitting' hehe
thanks again!!!

Re: nifheim I NEED TURTLE help!!!
Yes it is a tortoise and whoever painted its shell should be SHOT TO DEATH!!! EVIL people but i am sure it was a kid who didn't know any better. What area do you live in? I know there is a african spur turtle missing in Amityville and if your from around there then that might be it.

Re: nifheim I NEED TURTLE help!!!
I think he is a land turtle b/c of his claw-like feet. Iknow that much b/c Marc Marone had turtles on News 12 a few weeks ago. haha.
Other than that- I dont know much about them. Your dog looks interested...awww.
It looks like a kid did the shell painting. It looks like nail polish- that cant be good
Are you going to keep it? Maybe bring it to a local pet shop. Maybe they can tell you what he needs...other than some nail polish remover ...j/k

Re: nifheim I NEED TURTLE help!!!
FM you this but just in case
It might be that species if so here is a care sheet for it http://www.wnyherp.org/care-sheets/turtles/african-spur-thigh-sulcata.php. OR it could be a russian tort http://www.wnyherp.org/care-sheets/turtles/russian-tortoise.php
They need warm temps, some hay or newspaper to lay in.. best to put it in a nice tubbeware bin usually 45-50 gal make sure its longer then deep if possible. A small water bowl and for food for right now give him/her some fruits and leafy greens like dandalion greens or romaine lettuce.
They live a long time and he probably needs some care. If you need help to give him a home I HIGHLY recommend Judy from http://www.turtlerescues.com/. She lives in out east and she can care and place him/her to the appropriate person.

Re: nifheim I NEED TURTLE help!!!
spurs have more 'spurs' on the feet they protrude and usually have some pyramiding (not a healhty sign but it tends to happen more in the species) that is why i am thinking it could be a russian or greek since both are sold in petshops. I always wanted torts but they live longer and have more special care needed. I feel so bad for it.. being painted like that.
