how does everyone know that there are no kids? Is this usually communicated by word of mouth?

Re: No Kids
We made sure our invites said 'Adult Reception to Follow' and told the few people who had kids that their would be no children.

Re: No Kids
Some brides on here have mentioned putting adult reception or ___ # of adults attending. I would do use one of those and word of mouth. I am not having kids either (Just immediate family).

Re: No Kids
generally the wording on the invitation dictates the 'no kids' policy. so if you only want Mr. and Mrs. John Smith, that's what you write on the invite. If you wanted their kids to come too, you would say, Mr. and Mrs. John Smth and Family, or just, The Smith Family.
word of mouth works too though

I agree, this is what I did. I made sure I told people too. No one has complained to me. I figured I'm having a Saturday night wedding, so this could be used as a date night too.

Re: No Kids
i just addressed everything to Mr & Mrs John Smith and made no indication that the kids were invited. and we passed the word along as well, in case anyone asked and we didn't have any problems!

Re: No Kids
this is what we did
1) we put 'Adult Reception' on the invite
2)made sure to address invites as Mr. & Mrs. John Smith -- with no 'Family' or kids names on it
3)spread our request by word of mouth thru the family--including saying to the specific ppl we knew wanted to bring kids, that they were not allowed
4)made sure we had our RSVP card say:
'We have reserved ___ places in your honor' and we put the # in for them---so they knew only '2' were invited---not being able to add a child to the number.
(fyi--one person DID scracth out the 2 and put a 7 instead--the BALLS!)

Re: No Kids
Our Reception Card said:
Adult Reception to Follow
plus - when you write out the inside envelope - if you want their kids to be there - you would put '& family' I would think...

Re: No Kids
You don't invite them.
Seriously!
If you feel the need to be MORE specific, you can put on your response cards '___ of 2 will attend' or '__ of 1 will attend' or '2 seats have been reserved in your honor. ___ will attend.'
You can also put 'Adult Only Reception' on the reception card.
Just monitor your responses closely to make sure people don't put their kids down anyway. DEFINITELY put a 'Number Attending____' line on your response cards (this is helpful for friends who intend to bring a date, but only write their name on the response card - ugh!)

Re: No Kids
With me it was kind of diffrent, I had my FMIL and my aunt 'spill the beans' to the families before we send out our invitations. I told my FH to tell his friends ahead of time (politely) and I mentioned to my friends with children politely that we're not having kids at the wedding.
I also put 'Adult Reception' on the invitation so that they get the point..lol

Re: No Kids
From what I hear, if you are having no kids, you need to cover all basis..
1) adult reception to follow on invite 2) # of adults attand and/or X# of places have been reserved in your honor
and 3) have your family spread the word
