My family does not understand the need for professional photography. I am very budget conscious but i still think its important to have a photographer to at least know that the special moments will be captured.
Both FH parents and mine think that we should just have family members use their own digital cameras and maybe have disposable cameras for the guests. They say they NEVER look at their albums and nor do their children so whats the point. Was this more common to do 10 years ago? Is this a waste of money??
If I thought that we could pull off taking our own pictures I totally would but it dosent seem practical to me to spend all this $$$ on a wedding and not have really good memories.

Re: No professional photography?
I agree. You don't need a huge expensive package but you should have someone there who knows what they are doing.
Also, atleast your parents have the option to look at their albums if they want. They want you to not even have that option

There are some inexpensive photographers out there that just take the pics and give you the proofs on DVD and then u can make your own album(s) this is much more inexpensive than a package so maybe you can look into that
As far as asking people to take pics - 1. I feel like you are inviting people to be your guests, they should not be assigned a 'job', but should be able to enjoy their time
2. table cameras - waste of money, people either take bad pics or dont give cameras back
3. guests wont be there beforehand if you want pics of you getting ready and things like that
again, this is JMO

Actually, if you don't get albums, photography can be really affordable.
Get a photographer that will give you all your digital proofs, then you can make your own albums at a fraction of the cost on kodakgallery.com or one of those other picture sites.
I really think you will regret it if you don't have photos. Just cuz they don't look at theirs doesn't mean you won't look at yours !

I think wedding photos are one thing you do not want to regret... Better to spend a little to have them- than to skimp and have regrets. Many photogs now offer packages where they just take the pics and sell you the raw files- so you can opt to make (or not make) any books or print out any pics. Check out my photog- DUET - they are absolutely on the inexpensive side & will work with you!

I agree with the above. You want your guests to enjoy themselves as much as possible. I know my parents don't look at their wedding album that much but I LOVE going through their album.
FH and I are planning on making our own wedding album which cut down on the cost a lot. If you're looking for someone for 10 hours <$2,000 you could try my photographer (Yun Gen Yang). He's such a sweet person, very enthusiastic and talented. Plus he includes the engagement shoot for free!

Oops..I forgot to add..
Our photographer also does 'a la carte' services for weddings. He's $150/hour (+tax) for a min of 3 hours...So that's another option in case you don't want to get a full package....

I think photography is so imprtant also. IF you family wont budge a bit, why not invest a videographer.
Although like everyone said you can get someone to just take shots for you and sell you all the digiital files on a cd. and then you can jsut make your albums.

Re: No professional photography?
My sister decided to cut corners on the photography for her wedding...so...she hired a photography student. She said that was the only regret of her whole wedding. We had cameras on the table and I took a hundred digital...and still she really doesn't have a single OUTSTANDING photo...they all have shadows or someone looking the wrong direction...shop around...you WILL find someone in your budget.

Re: No professional photography?
I honestly think you should definitely have a photographer. It doesnt have to be a pro, but at least have a family member/friend do it as their 'job'. (more so as a guest)
My sister didnt get a photographer because of her budget and regrets it so much. They thought at the time, that everyone would just take pics and they did table cameras.
Well, her DHs little brother wasted like 75% of the film on taking pics of himself in the mirror and of peoples feet and the rest were just ok. Also, his family took most of the pics and they only took of their side. So, we have no pics of our family from her wedding. not good ones anyway.
Her wedding was 2 years ago. She regrets it so much that she is going to go to Davids and get a $99 dress and he will rent a tux and take new pics...just to have something.

Many photographers will have a basic package where they show up and take the pics and then you can make prints and albums on your own. Some people use shutterfly.com.

Re: No professional photography?
Unless your guests are photographers, they will never, ever capture the day the way that a professional would. They will be drinking, eating, dancing, laughing, talking etc. Then you have get them to actually send you the pics. You can most definitely find an inexpensive professional photographer. I think you might regret it if you don't have it!

Plus...photographers are also very helpful in directing the action of your day. They are kind of like DOCs.

Re: No professional photography?
i agree. If my photo package wasn't in my price range i was gonna to opt to not go for albums and make my own. But i def. think it is important to have a professional take shots to capture your special day! It's something i think u would regret down the line. When you rely on family and friends you may turn out to be really upset that the missed certain things.. a pro photographer knows what to take and will capture ure day in a way that will help u remember it for years to come!!

Re: No professional photography?
personally I think photography is important, in the end all you will have is pictures and rings. I got pics for around 2000. I'm not doing video, for that I am going to buy a video camera and getting someone to tape that.
