I am new to this site, and there are a lot of great resources here. Can't wait to dig through them. I am trying to plan a wedding for next fall, and I am having SUCH a hard time finding somewhere to have the wedding. I don't care for the traditional Long Island Catering Hall - I have been to so many weddings like this, and I never feel that they are worth what the couple pays for them.
I think they feel impersonal, and the food is never great. I was wondering if someone knew of a venue (not further east than Riverhead, say), where we could rent out the space and bring our own catering. I don't want something ornate at all. I just want something pretty, laid back, and fairly elegant (kinda like me). I was thinking along the lines of a barn or something like that, but I have no idea!
I know finding a caterer will be challenging, but FH and I are very very into food, and I would actually think about having a wedding at a restaurant with amazing food if we didn't have a fairly large (175) guest list and we also really do want to have a big dance party.
Thanks!

Re: Non Traditional Reception Locations?
my friend is doing exactly this, but in upstate ny. unfortunately though, she is ending up paying just as much for a catering hall. it is at at b&b in a field with a barn in case of rain and it looks BEAUTIFUL. she also has to bring in all of her own alcohol, port-a-potties, linens, silverware, napkins, food, cocktail hour food etc...
kudos to you for wanting to do this i think it's a wonderful idea... however, it's probably going to end up costing you just as much if not more! budget, budget, budget! good luck!

I think you will find when you want something 'different' it's going to cost a lot and that is why a lot of girls go with traditional catering halls. When you start looking into unusual places, that require outside catering, many require site fee anywhere from $1,000 - $5,000 just to allow you to use their facilities and then you have to bring in every piece of china, glass, lighting, alcohol, bartenders, catering, etc.
One place, I had to pay for every car to be valet, security fees, site fees, etc. It gets very costly this way.
exactly, i wanted a different type of venue too but all those places were actually costing ALOT more. One place even charges you for the electricity that night lol. Then you had to get separate catering plus rent all the chairs, linens, silverware and so on. Plus the alcohol they were charging at most non traditional places were insanely high, many of them were like $10 per person per hour, now if you have alot of ppl that comes out to alot. Then you had to pay clean for alot of places and security. So although i paid alot per person at a traditional place, the non traditional places i liked were costing more and just alot of extra work.
im sure though that some places can work it out a little better

Re: Non Traditional Reception Locations?
I didn't want a traditional catering hall either. I wanted a mansion and a place with 1 wedding at a time. Since we are having a fall wedding, I wanted to keep with the cozy, warm, homey feel. We looked at the Woodlands, de Seversky Center, Glen Cove Mansion, Vanderbilt Mansion, and the Royalton (where we ultimately booked). All of them were under $175 pp and all had 1 wedding at a time.
I agree with the other poster... having something 'unique' usually equals big bucks. If you have something outside, you need tents, tables, linens, plates, chairs, silverware and you even need to rent bathrooms=aka portapotties. It's better to have it indoors or at a place that is used to having events.
For something different, you can try museums, lofts, or even the New York Public Library on 42nd St. I went to a fantastic work event there and it is gorgeous.
Good luck in your search!

Re: Non Traditional Reception Locations?
Welcome and Congrats!I am not sure if you would like a boat but nautical cruise lines in long island has a great boat and the prices are under 100 pp. I was really considering this and had a tasting and everything. The food was really good and Debbie, the BM is great. I went with Coral house because it had everything nautical did with the view and the water background but it cost even less!!! The website is www.nauticalcruiselines.com. It's on the nautical mile at Freeport and it's like a floating reception hall. Hope you find what right for you and your FH!!!

Sorry, didnt see her comment further down.....
On the other side of the spectrum, there's Westbury Manor which I really like and was very different from everything I had been looking at, has a very homey, cozy feel and were VERY easy to negotiate with which was a nice relief

Re: Non Traditional Reception Locations?
I am kinda obsessed with ethnic weddings......plattedeutche house has a beer garden in back.....I also always thought it could be fun to have some sort of mexican style reception. The smithtown historical society has a brush barn, maybe they would rent out

Re: Non Traditional Reception Locations?
There are so many halls in Brooklyn that charge only $100 per person, with all you can eat food, cocktail hour, dessert, etc. Check out Metropole (I just posted a review with pics), Passage Palace, etc.

Was going to suggest the Old Field Vineyard in Southold.
Someone on here also got married at like EAB Plaza or something like that and it looked AWESOME...
Check out this link for some non-traditional locations---Can't vouch for price on any of them but it might help you out.LINK

this is the place that charges you for the electricity that night. They make you contact the electric company and you pay them directly

Re: Non Traditional Reception Locations?
we wanted something different too - something trendy, in NYC, lofty type place.....BUT too much of a headache and a lot of $$$$ - so we went traditional and it was still amazing and i loved our wedding....
if you really search i am SURE you can find something affordable and beautiful that is 'you'....
our eparty was outdoors and we did everything ourselves and i would have LOVED to have our wedding at the same place (we thought about it but decided not too b/c of weather risks and also the expense and headache of catering - so that is why we chose to have our eparty there instead)....when i look back i could have done a totally different type of wedding there - summer, outdoor, lots of flowers and i would have loved it -its funny considering i had the exact opposite and loved that too
ok im rambling....good luck and do a lot of research! you may find something perfect for you!

I know and the place is HUGE so i cant even imagine what that bill is like
Oooo forgot to mention one place that is AMAZING, Angel Orensanz here are some pics. Some ppl told me the prices are better at this place, not sure how true that is but my only problem was that i think it has to end at 11pm, hopefully they changed that. Also theres the puck building

I've only been engaged for a month and I am already stressing out about the wedding and the budget.
I want to keep everything under 35k. I am hoping this is possible. The reason I was hoping for something a little different is that I thought it would be cheaper. I went to 2 weddings in November, and one actually was fantastic, but it was at the Inn at New Hyde Park, and while the food was actually very delicious, I don't think its 'me'. And I am pretty sure at both weddings I was at, the cost was close to 200pp.
I guess I'll just have to hit the pavement and see what is out there.
The more that I look through threads, the more my head is spinning!
Having a wedding at a non wedding hall type place is def going to be a more expensive event. Me and my fiance looked into having our wedding at a vineyard out east but not only did you have to pay for the site (which ranged anywhere from $5,000.00-$12,000.00) you had to also pay per person for an ouside catererer.
All the other unique places as well you have to pay for a site fee and than extra for catering per person.
There are a lot of places out there that are very 'unique' but still considered a traditional wedding hall at lower than $100.00 per person.
We are having our wedding at the Vanderbilt Mansion at Dowling College. It was very reasonable and very unique I thought. You should look into Lessings catering.....A lot of the mansions on the island.

Re: Non Traditional Reception Locations?
I went to an event at the Angel Orensanz building...it was unbelievable.
I think its out of our price range though - and the majority of our families are on LI or CT (very close to the ferry), so its easier for them to come to LI - and our friends, who are younger, don't mind coming out from the city.
I have been doing a lot of research, and I have appointments to see
Old Field Club Timber Point Mansion Land's End (I think this may be out of our budget, but my mother wants to look) Captain Bill's (I would never have thought of this, but went to a wedding there this past weekend, and it was so delicious. The room wasn't anything special, but I bet it is amazing in the summer)
Its so stressful! I am tempted to go to vegas and elope!!
